Barry (Wales)Newest Review: ... including train and bus times on (0870) 608 2 608. The leisure activities available on the island are varied and almost everyone will be able to find something they enjoy. The 2 main tourist attractions are Whitmore Bay, (a sandy beach) and the Pleasure Park. There are also gardens, shops, amusement arcades, pubs, cafes, bars, nightclubs and restaurants; in fact all the things you would ... more |

I used to live in Barry, (Y Barri in welsh) and since leaving I have missed it a lot and so thought I’d put my Barry review up for all you Dooyoo members to read. Barry Island used to be home to a large Butlin's Holiday Park. I am sure some of you visited there, but earlier this year the site was demolished, somewhat emotionally, and a tourist research centre is to be built in its place. This was a very sad occasion and the end of an era but the heyday of the holiday park seems to be past. Despite the loss of the Butlins, which had been closed for several years, Barry Island and Barry still have an enormous amount to offer tourists and residents ... Read the complete review

Barry Island, where to begin... I may see it through rose-tinted glasses as I went there often with my Dad and sisters when I was little. But I really don't think it's anywhere near as bad as people make out! Unfortunately, the pleasure park has fallen into a state of disrepair, which I understand is due to a lack of investment by the owners, so some rides are standing but not operating. However, that is not all there is to Barry Island! Sadly, the old holiday camp is nearly completely demolished now. I was born in Barry, but moved away some ten years ago to start a new life elsewhere. I still occasionally visit the town, and it breaks my heart to see how far downhill this once thriving town has gone. The once fine town hall is no longer in use, with windows boarded up with black wood. The main square of the town in front of the town hall, King Square, had some fountains built upon in some time ago. These no longer work, and are full of rubbish. The town centre and Holton Road used to boast dozens of speciality stores. Apart from those which cluster close the derelict town hall, most of these are now closed, with little hope of being ... I used to go to Butlin's in Barry Island, South Wales. We would go every year for about four years in the 1980s and it used to be a wonderful place. The holiday camp was great, it had lots of activities - sports, cinema, theatre, discos, entertainment, etc. - and we always had a really good time there. There was also a very good fair just outside the camp, so we usually took a day out to go and spend a few hours there. But then Butlin's sold the camp and the place seemed to fall apart. We visited Barry on a day trip a couple of years later and everywhere looked so bleak and dismal, it was very sad. I visited again on a day ... Read the complete review
