Advantages: Lovely on a sunny day!, Nice little walk, Not far to get to from Cardiff
Disadvantages: V. busy on bank holidays
Barry Island, where to begin...
I may see it through rose-tinted glasses as I went there often with my Dad and sisters when I was little. But I really don't think it's anywhere near as bad as people make out!
Unfortunately, the pleasure park has fallen into a state of disrepair, which I understand is due to a lack of investment by the owners, so some rides are standing but not operating. However, that is not all there is to Barry Island!
Sadly, the old holiday camp is nearly completely demolished now. The chalets went some time ago to make way for some new houses, but the main buildings and swimming pools were left until the beginning of this year.
When I visit, we normally drive up the hill, past the pleasure park and walk around by Jackson's Bay, across the beach and along the lovely coastal pathway. This then takes you to the promenade. On a sunny day, this is really nice to walk along, there are a few seaside shops including ice-cream and chip shops as well as quite a few amusement arcades which are always good. The beach is fairly clean though to be honest I wouldn't go in the sea. There are also a few bars which are heaving on bank holidays.
If you are thinking of making a trip to Barry Isalnd, you should know that most days it is fairly quiet even if it is sunny. But, on a bank holiday it is very busy! If the weather is not great then there isn't that much to do but you'll be kept busy for a couple of hours at least!
