Advantages: Tube Location, Lots of food choice, Suits all budgets
Disadvantages: Busy, More shopping than tourist sights but not far from the tourist action!
We booked a hotel in Bayswater called The Westminster. I chose it because I was going to be visiting Hyde Park, Kensington and take in a show at Hammersmith. Bayswater has a good central tube station on the circle line that means all the tourist favourites are within easy reach. On arrival we discovered a busy high street with air full of the smells of a wide variety of cuisine. Egyptian food, Indian, Italian, Mexican and so on. There was a real international feel about the place and a mix of age groups. Trendy clothes shops mixed with bargain shops selling souvenirs. Whiteleys Shopping centre contains a gym and lots of quality high street stores. There was a shop for every budget and interest. rare shops like Aveda have chosen Bayswater together with London regulars like Starbucks. There really is no problem finding a place to eat. Even on a Saturday Evening you can get a seat in a cafe for a large good value meal. There are lots of touts in the streets advertising local hotels but they are polite and unobtrusive. The hotel was situated in one of many Bayswater squares. The impressive buildings are in differing states of repair but I found myself imagining owning one and how luxurious that seemed! If you approach Kensington Gardens from Queensway you can follow a large pathway through the gardens to Kensington. The gardens contain Kensington Palace and the Albert Memorial which is a more impressive site than you may imagine and is opposite the Albert Hall, surprisingly crowded in by tall buildings. From here you can visit the Science Museum, Sloane Street, Harrods, we saw London fashion week's buildings set up while we were staying and tried to star spot outside!
Plenty to do in this less touristy area which gives you a true flavour of london culture.
