Advantages: lots to do, easy to park
Disadvantages: lots of Brummy accents (I'm allowed to say that 'cus I'm a native)
I'm slightly upset that my home town (though I've now emigrated further north) doesn't even get a mention in the city stakes. After all, it is the supposed 2nd city - Birmingham that is. Now before you all rush to tell me that Manchester, Liverpool etc etc have more going as a 2nd city, I am talking historically! However, although I've now become a country bumpkin I have to tell you all the redeeming features that Brum has to offer.
It is one of the few city centres that you are able to drive and park in relatively easily (and I've visited a few). When in the centre there's lots to do all within a short distance. There's the National Indoor Arena (where Gladiators and several horse jumping events are held)located close to the Sealife Centre (worth a visit as long as you have a buy one get one free offer or something such like - fills in a couple of hours but don't make a special trip)and the acoustically sound Symphony Hall. These facilties are located in the newly revamped, trendy area, known as the Gas Street Basin, which consists of canals and trendy bars/restaurants giving a continental feel (yes we are talking about Brum). All this is a stones throw from the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Museum and Art Gallery, Central Library (ok so Prince Charles did liken the building to an incinerator, but it is the largest reference library in Europe - or was when I lived there!). These are all located amongst the central shopping areas where you can buy virtually anything, for any taste. Of course there are also loads of things to do within a short drive of the City centre such as the NEC, the National Motorcycle Museum (if that takes your fancy), Cadbury's World to name but a few. All this in a multicultural society where the people are very friendly - it has loads to offer, pay a visit!
