Advantages: Lovely beaches, nice views, beautiful
Disadvantages: lack of parking
On a recent visit to north Wales; to 'rock out' with friends in Snowdonia I took 2 trips to Borth-y-Gest, one day after the other because I have fallen in love with the place.
Borth-Y-Gest is the loveliest place I've ever been (and I've been to a lot of places!). I'm not going to write this review like I would normally write; instead I will tell you what I love about this magical place and what is around it.
As far as staying near Borth goes you have a lot of choices. You can camp in any number of places in Snowdonia for a small amount of money. The (very) nearby town of Porthmadog also has some fairly cheap hotels and B&B's too. B&B's in Broth-Y-Gest itself can prove quite expensive, but if the have the funds then its well worth staying in the village as its lovely.
As a keen photographer I had been looking online for some nice places around north Wales where I could get some inspiration. Borth was mentioned, along with several other places. Borth was at the bottom of my list, and I only ended up there by chance as my TomTom doesn't speak Welsh and did not recognise any of the other places on the list!
I turned up in the village and parked in a little car park by the lovely little harbour. From here I took a short walk to the beginning of the coastal footpath, and I couldn't believe my eyes!!
The golden sand stretches as far as the eye can see, with low water levels and vast sand islands it really is a spectacular sight. There are little boats here and there and people fishing from the beaches and rocks. There was also kite surfers and jet skis whizzing around.
A short walk up the coastal path leads to some steps down to the beach. The steps are a bit precarious but ok if taken slowly. The beach itself is made up of lovely soft fine sand, and picturesque rocks (yes the look nice!). You can walk miles from here (with a bit of rock climbing to get to different parts of the beach). The best part is, because the sea is so shallow it warms up quickly, so on a sunny day you can swim in quite warm water!
The wide beaches also make it ideal for stunt kiting and land surfing, both of which were going on when I visited. The beach was being used also by family and groups of people for BBQ's, volleyball, football and all sorts of other games. Yet it still wasn't crowded. The vast beaches of Broth-Y-Gest make them ideal for a family outing.
Anyway, I can't go on about this place all day, but I really would say that you should visit; because its beautiful and I love it. When I die, I want my ashes scattered here!
Who'd have thought I'd love Wales so much.........
Summary: I want to move here!
