Great atmosphere and market! (Brixton)

Advantages: Diverse, unusual shops/food Disadvantages: Can have a "scary" reputation Having lived near Brixton a few years ago I feel well placed to give an opinion on this area of South London - on first impressions, the area is culturally vibrant, busy and i wasnt too sure i would want to be there alone at night time! However, yes, the area is very busy with people dancing in the streets and music blaring from the smaller shops but there is a definate charm to the area - there is a big market full of excellent caribbean food, fresh fish and random groceries which are a lot cheaper than you will find on the high street Sainsburys/Iceland etc! The bars in the area are a lot better than Clapham - less commercial and better music - there are specific genres in several smaller bars too! The clubs in the area are not really to be recommended - Mass is truely awful, dingy, dirty and full of drugs. The others are known for their drugs although the police have tried to stop this, however the reputation still pervails. Therefore great for seom drinks but other than that I would head to contral london! Food in the area is also culturally different, lots of caribbean with some french - gorgeous little home run places! Transport links are excellent, placed the same distance from Central London as Claphma, the Victoria line starts at Brixton therefore you always get a seat, the tubes are on time and engineering is no longer a problem on this line. The area is full of less "brand new to London" 23-30yr olds - people tend to move out here as it is less manic but easy to access everywhere if you want to. Summary: Fab - dont just the book by its cover! |
