Advantages: Good day out (or two)
Disadvantages: Costly, very commercial
Cheddar Gorge, the UK's answer to the grand canyon!! Well, its not half as good as the American version but it is worth a visit. I think I should start by saying that if you don't like commercialised areas then DO NOT go here, the main street is full of gift shops, ice cream vendors and restaurants. There is a series of attractions to visit, including caves and a big climb, although it must be noted that these are not cheap. They do however provide a great day out, and feature many beatiful and awesome views.
The gorge itself (that is why you would go) is good but not spectacular. Access to the top is hard, if at all possible so you are resticted to looking up from the bottom. The town itself is pictureque, a nice little river runs down the main street.
There are plenty of bed and breakfasts to stay in, and a great selection of restaurants and pubs to eat in. A day and a night at the Gorge will be all the time you spend in Cheddar, but it would be a good base for a holiday, and a very beatiful town to spend a while in.
Overall, a good visit.
