Advantages: Lots to do and see

Disadvantages: May be far away from home?

Chesterfield is in north Derbyshire and is around 10 miles away from Sheffield. Chesterfield and the surrounding areas have a population of around 100,000 but the town itself has around 70,000 people.

When visiting Chesterfield the first sign you see will declare 'Chesterfield - Historic Market Town'. Which is true. I think I can remember there being around 250-300 market stalls available.

Chesterfield is most popular for it's famous Crooked Spire, which is why our local football team are nicknamed 'The Spireites'.
The Crooked spire is located on top of Chesterfields largest church and is located in the town centre. A few years ago the council received funding for spotlights to surround the Church and now it is a really lovely sight and sets a lovely atmosphere in the town at night.

Other than sightseeing and shopping, there are plenty of things to keep you occupied in Chesterfield. We have the Pomegranate Theatre which always has the latest shows playing and The Winding Wheel is a large entertainment venue which is host to various shows almost every night of the week. Here you will find anything from Ballet to Ju-Jitzu shows.

They are also host to the Spotlight Comedy Club, which has many comedians from the edinburgh festival and many TV comedians such as Ed Byrne and Dave Spikey (is it Dave?, that one from Pheonix Nights? I think so).

There is the Chesterfield Museum which is quite an interesting place to spend an afternoon. I'm not sure what is on at the moment but they have various exhibitions, usually relating to the history of Derbyshire.

We also have quite a large nightscene and I have many friends in Sheffield who come over each weekend as they actually prefer it here. We have lots of pubs and clubs within a short walking distance of each other throughout the town centre.

There is also 'The Brampton Mile', this is a row of 13 pubs within a mile on one long road (Chatsworth Road) that leads to the town centre.
This is quite a popular night out as a lot of groups start at one end, buy a pint in each pub and see who is still standing at the other end.
I think a couple of the Pubs have closed down now but it is still a good night out.

We also have lots of parks and grassy areas including the award winning Queens Park.
Located just out of the town centre, it has large sports halls, 3 swimming pools and water slide and vast areas of green land. There is also a cricket pitch and a large pond where you can hire boats out in the summer. Queens Park also has it's very own train line! There is a long track around the park and you can take a tour of the park on the train for around £1.50 in the summer. Kids especially enjoy this as it is a steam engine so can blow it's horn just like Thomas!

A lot of people travel to Chesterfield for the day as it is great for shopping and sightseeing and as most of the action happens in the town centre you can see a lot within one day.

I would recommend Chesterfield, but then I would - I'm biased because I live here so you'll have to come and make your own mind up!

Summary: A fun day out with lots to see
