Advantages: find the best pubs, convenience on tap!

Disadvantages: find the worst pubs

My friend ‘Tange” and I have devised the Pub Toilet Test for public houses in the Chesterfield area. Following the ten point scheme, as outlined below, we rate the pubs (not clubs) according to the state of their toilets. Please note only ladies toilets checked out.

Best 5 (not in any particular order)
 The Market, Market Place, Chesterfield
 Spa Lane Vaults, St Marysgate, Chesterfield (JD Wetherspoons consortium) –upstairs but disabled facilities available downstairs
 Portland Hotel, bottom of New Square, Chesterfield (JD Wetherspoons consortium) ) –upstairs but disabled facilities available downstairs – see notes below.
 Rutland Arms, Stephenson Place, Chesterfield
 Barkers Bar, Knifesmithgate, Chesterfield

Worst 3
 Blue Bell/Level 2, Cavendish Street, Chesterfield – no locks, toilet paper, disgusting basins. Only good thing going for it is you can go to the toilet without having to enter the pub and buy a drink, so if you are desperate before closing time, it is convenient for the chippy opposite!
 The Golden Fleece, Knifesmithgate, Chesterfield – unsuitable for disabled people, as on the staircase, only 3 toilets and only 1 flushes
 The Twisted Pinnacle (formerly O’Neills), Stephenson Place, Chesterfield – Irish names were printed on the door, with no English alternative (now altered), only 2 cubicles, peculiar step just inside the ladies – possible Health & Safety health hazard, and dryer never works.

The scheme awards a point for each of the following:
1. Cubicle door being present – vital for privacy
2. Bolt for door working – also vital for privacy
3. Toilet seat present – we must have our home comforts!
4. Toilet paper present
5. Flush working
6. Working taps/clean basins
7. Hand towels present/working dryer
8. Hygiene machine
s, including checking/comparing prices
9. Overall cleanliness
10. Extra point for any originality (eg a mirror in the cublicle, like The Market PH in Chesterfield Market Place.

The list can vary from week to week as to which pubs are in the top 5

PS The Spa Lane Vaults and Portland Hotel have only been under the management of JD Wetherspoons since July 2001 and we have found their drink and meal prices to be very reasonable too. Well worth a visit, but the Portland is less suitable for disabled visitors as they can not access the pub from the beer garden, although the beer garden is accessible from the road by wheelchairs.
