Young Professional Central... (Clapham)

Advantages: Bars Clubs and low-cost restaurants Disadvantages: Drunken and bad transport link Having lived in Clapham a few years ago I think I would disagree with some points on the other review - to sum the area up it is where you go when you are on a grad scheme or "Young Professional" and have just moved to London. There are three nighclubs, several late night bars aand restaurants running all the way down the highstreet and there are several kebab houses thrown into the mix. Add in a Sainsburys etc and that is pretty much Clapham! The housing the area tends to be victorian flats and in terms of local entertainment there is a cinema and a lovely big park which everyone jogs round (or sunbathes in in droves in summer!). transport links are good but beware the Northern line up to London - this is well known to be one of the worst in the area as it is packed, hot and slow - it does however always turn up on time unlike others such as the Jubilee line etc! Some areas of Clapham, namely going towards Clapham Junction (dont be fooled, this is a fifteen minute bus away from Clapham) and down towards Balham are nicer but then have the trouble of not being too close to a tube link. All in all a busy place but it you want less "YP" and to stay in the area then go to Brixton which is more culturally vibrant and the bars are cooler or Stockwell which is fantastic for links as on the Victoria/Northern crossover and takes less than five mins to get to either Clapham or Stockwell! Summary: Great as a first London base |
