Advantages: Lots of pubs.

Disadvantages: People

Having lived in Colchester for over 10 years now I like to think I've experienced enough of it to give a reasonably balanced opinion on the old place. Maybe it's because I've now moved on, being a student and all, and perhaps it's perfectly natural to think of your home town as a bit crap, but it seems to get worse every time I go home.
Colchester is quite an attractive town as far as towns go, shopping facilites are excellent if your a big girl, and there's plenty of pubs, but the people, oh God the people. Maybe it's something in the air, the sea breeze's perhaps rolling along the river Colne, but everyone come Friday night wants to fight. This situation is amplified by the fact that often the squaddies are on the prowl. Now most normal civies would give these boys a wide berth, lets face it they're trained to kill, not the local Colchester boys, oh no, to them a squaddie is just another Joe, therefore fights insue. A word of warning, if your goin out in Colchester wear trainers, you can run faster.
At the moment I reside in Hayes, now lets get it in perspective, some of the things that go on down here that I read about in the paper are infinately more brutal than back home. Hayes is not a nice area, people have the tendency to disappear or get crucified near Heathrow. Why is it then I've never had anyone problems in Hayes in the two years I've lived hear, no threats, no beatings, muggings, shootings etc. etc., yet when I go home, the fact that someone recognises me from 10 years ago because I called them a twat or something equally as harsh decides nows the time to settle it once and for all.
Another thing, people don't leave, every time I go home I'll bump into the same old people I went to school with, happy in there badly paid jobs being voilated by their bosses on a regular basis. It seems no-one in Colchester has the aim of bettering themselves. I don't think this is just a problem in C
olchester I think that many town s of a similar size just outside big cities have the same problem, and I don't think that will ever change, so we'll just have to put up with it, but God it's annoying.

Wow didn't know I'd cause such offense, I take all your points about squaddies in their own pubs but what about kicking out time. Don't get me wrong I don't lothe the place, it just a bit annoying thats all. So lets all calm down a bit and enjoy the sunshine in the beautiful Castle park.

I am sorry that you feel this way about the town, but dont you think you gave a bit of a one-sided argument? I mean in just the squaddie aspect? As the first person to leave a comment on here said they tend to stick to their own pubs. If you go looking for trouble then you wil undoubtedly find it.How do you know that all the people in the town are in badly paid jobs and being violated by their bosses? I am not. And why do you think that we stay here? Could it be that we just like the place? I do. I think you could have done a bit more research here.
