Chances are if you've ever heard of Crewe, you'll have heard that phrase. 'The Railway Men' is the nickname for the football team - Crewe Alexandra who are currently languishing at the bottom of the 1st Division. However, Crewe is also known for it's...yeah, you've guessed it - the railways. Trains aren't exactly the best topic to discuss at the moment - especially if you're looking for favourable remarks but Crewe brought about some of the best changes and developments the UK has seen in this industry. Crewe is a major link in the railway network and still plays a vital role today. Other industries here include Rolls Royce - also home of the Bentley. You can hardly walk around Crewe or Nantwich without bumping into someone who has a relative who works/has worked there. Crewe is also home to the English Touring Theatre! How wonderful is that? The thing is, mentioning all these items makes people believe that Crewe is an affluent area. Maybe it should be - it definitely isn't. The poverty in Crewe is appalling - there are well off people, but there are hundreds of people whose living conditions are desperate. The railway has been in decline in Crewe - surely it won't be long until Crewe is just another forgotten station. Rolls Royce is now owned by foreigners - another British tradition sunk. Finally, English Touring Theatre is moving away from the Lyceum. Protests are currently ensuing but it looks like all of the youth theatres will be shut too - due to cutbacks by the council. I'm proud to have been born here - pity no-one seems interested in saving it. Everyone I speak to who lives there can't wait to get away - ashamed as I am to admit it, I couldn't wait either.
