Advantages: Wonderful, easy to visit, not so expensive, evocative
Disadvantages: none
4 years ago I went with some friends of mine for a Scotland tour and we stayed in Edinburgh 4 days and we were literally fascinated by this town! Scots are very kind and gave us help whenever we were in trouble! Mary Stuart's castle is wonderful! It was founded in 13rd century and dominates all the town and at the entrance they gave us a Cd Player with the guide. Every zone of the castle has a number and you must select the corresponding track on the Cd for having all the explanations and the history of every single part of the Castle. Horrible to know how the Scots treated their prisoners! From the wall if the day is sunny you can see the Purgatory hill a black hill dominating the other side of the bay. We were there at the beginning of August in occasion of the Festival. The castle during night is lighted up by torches and the parades are absolutely evocative! Under the castle there is 18 holes field of minigolf on grass (golf is a national sport and passion) and a also cemetary exists in which some mathematicians and physicists (McLaurin and Maxwell above all) are buried) with a dog statue dedicated to a little dog that stay beside his master even after his death. We went to visit Murrayfield stadium where the national rugby team play thanks to the kindness of the ward (it was 9 a.m.) and there were 2 gardeners at work! Another wonderful castle is the one where the royal family resides when it's in Edinburgh. Other things to see the Cathedral of St. Giles, the monuments to Walter Scott (one black construction a lot alarming) and Horace Nelson (a lighthouse or watchtower) (in a perfect neoclassical surrounding with temples) near the Royal Astronomical Observatory. You must try Guinness or Tennent's or Triple Diamond with fish'n' Chips in pubs where bands play alive! If you don't have too much money you can stay in hostels (there many of them) whe
re it's possible to sleep without spending too much (approximately 12 pounds if the prices from then are not increased too much). For whom it appreciate kebab (very spicy lamb mixed up with very spicy vegetables!) i can suggest a lot of kebab shops for a very alternative dinner or supper! Edinburgh is a wonderful town and a wonderful travel and in 4 days you visit it all and you can have the impression of a time trip 900 years back!
