Advantages: Very quite good transport links
Disadvantages: None
Ely is a small quite city in Cambridgeshire with the most well known attraction being the Cathedral which has stood since 673AD. With the tallest point being in the region of 215ft tall it makes for a great landmark for the city in the surrounding flat fenland. Ely has a population of around 16,000 people.
Built on the River Ouse Ely offers a Marina and mooring for canal boats. As well as many places just to sit and enjoy watching life on the river go by on the sunny days. Tours of the river by boat take place on a regular basis and pre-booking is rarely needed.
Ely although quite offers plenty for a relaxed day out or weekend away. We usually take a ride out on the motorbikes for thr day as surrounding roads make for good riding and its local enough. There is the Cutters Inn pub on the river front along with traditional Tea Rooms also on the river.
There are the jubilee gardens here which are a good place to sit and relax with a fish and chip shop near by.
With the town centre offering a fair selection of restauraunts and more tea rooms, and most other shops you would expect to see in the high street. The centre of Ely is very much listed with most of the buildings being very old indeed. There aren't a huge amount of shops here but this would spoil the feel of the place if developed to much.
With a large amount of private and family run B&B's, many offering guest accomadation in the area you will never struggle for a place to stay for a reasonable price. There are hotels in the area but i find these to be far more expensive.
With very good transport links having a train station as well as buses running Ely would make a good base if exploring the area on a longer holiday. The University City of Cambridge is nearby and also the famous horse racing town of Newmarket is also within 20 minutes by car.
Oliver Cromwell was one of Ely's famous historic residents i believe being responsible for collection of taxes in the area. I believe the tourist information building here also has a historical connection with him.
Overall a picteresque city and an ideal place to relax for the weekend, or equally useful as a platform to explore the surrouding area. Full of history and architecture with museums and art galleries to visit definately worth a visit just to soak up the relaxed atmosphere of the place.
Summary: Great place to visit for a weekend break
