Advantages: Close to civilisation!
Disadvantages: Bad traffic, Quiet socially
Eyke is a small, pretty village near Woodbridge in Suffolk, which basically consists of one through road, 'The Street', along which most of the houses and facilities are grouped.
Eyke has a pub, 'The Elephant and Castle', a very popular and well-stocked village shop, village hall, recreation ground, with small children's play area, caravan park, a Norman church, B&Bs and a primary school. It's close to the railway station at Melton, which links at Ipswich with the Norwich to Liverpool Street mainline and the new National Trust visitors centre at Sutton Hoo.
Its a quiet village - I've lived there nearly a year and haven't met many people other than my immediate neighbours. This might be due to recent demographics: Until a few years ago, a few minutes up the road was the largest US Air Force base in Europe, Bentwaters. A large transient population of servicemen and their families took residence in the surrounding villages. The Americans have since left, but their housing at Rendlesham has been sold privately, with the result that traffic through Eyke can be appalling and high speed at times, so bad that I am reluctant to let my kitten outside! However, these issues have been widely recognised and the council has recently put traffic calming measures in place, which has improved things somewhat, although tractor drivers seem intent on running the bollards over!
There are few, specific attractions in Eyke, but the area has some great country walks - although signing and footpaths are not currently well maintained. It might be a bit off the beaten track for tourists 'though, who are more likely to explore the nearby historic market town of Woodbridge.
