Advantages: A beautiful village

Falkland is an ancient village in the Kingdom of Fife. The village is small and very pretty and is overlooked by Falkland Palace - once the 'holiday home' to Scotland's Kings and Queens including Mary Queen of Scots who named it as her favourite palace. Falkland therefore has a very royal history and still retains many of it's old houses, cottages and even cobbles.

Just strolling through the burgh you get a feel for the history but if you want to find out more you should check out the village exhibition in the Town Hall (oppositte the Palace). The exhibition is run by the National Trust for Scotland (as is the Palace) and is usually open in the summer months. It is small but gives you a really good background to the village - right from the medieval history up to the more modern linoleum factory, now a paper factory.

The Palace is a must visit - the interiors are fabulous and the gardens are lovely for a relaxing stroll. Don't forget to also have a good walk into the rest of the village to have a look at some of the pretty buildings and have a browse through the many little gift and antique shops. If you're looking for a nibble while you're there you have lots to choose from - many pubs, tearooms and restaurants and even a chinese restaurant. If you have time, remember to walk up to Falkland Estate where you can see the duckpond. magnificent Falkland House (now a school) and enjoy many of the woodland and hill walks.

Accommodation is a little limited as Falkland is very small but there are a couple of B&B's, a small hotel and a few self catering flats/cottages. More accommodation can be found in other towns nearby such as Glenrothes and Cupar.

Summary: Beautiful and ancient with lots to see and do.
