Advantages: So many lovely places in the area
Disadvantages: That you have to leave
Such a lovely place! Worth a visit. Fordingbridge is a small country town, on the banks of the River Avon & on the edge of the New Forest. It is in Hampshire, but close to the Wiltshire border. We found it a good base, Stonehenge & Salisbury just a 15 minute drive(traffic permitting). Bournmouth just 20 minutes. Southhampton is not too far either. Fordingbridge is quiet and quaint. There is a lovely pub/restaurant called The George, overlooking the river. It serves very good meals & snacks. Children are welcome too. We stayed in the Ashburn Hotel, which I highly recommend. It is of very high standard & the meals are silver service & the food excellent, as were all of the staff. It is a quiet Hotel with a bar, set in lovely landscaped gardens with a Heated outdoor swimming pool, the pool is covered each night & is kept very clean. The Hotel was immaculately clean. On the drive into Fordingbridge if you enter on the B3078, you cross through the New Forest, where there are horses & ponies roaming free, it is such a great site, seeing so many horses everywhere, they stand in the road, seemingly unaware of the cars. They are protected, so there is a speed limit on the road. There are plenty of places you can stop & pull over. There are also cows roaming about too, & pigs...(although we never saw any pigs). There are many places of interest in the area, and some beautiful villages. If you have children, Paultons (theme park) is close. We had never been to this area before & were not at all disappointed. It was a shame we had to leave.
