Glasgow (Glaschu in Gaelic; or Glesca/Glesga in Scots) is the largest city in Scotland. The City of Glasgow is also the most populous unitary authority area. It is situated on the River Clyde in the country's west central lowlands. People from Glasgow are known as Glaswegians. Glaswegian is also the name of the local dialect of Scots, which is popularly referred to as "the Glasgow Patter". Formerly a royal burgh, Glasgow was known as the "Second City of the British Empire" in the Victorian era. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the population grew to over one million people. With large-scale relocation to new towns on the outskirts of the city and successive boundary changes, the current population of the City of Glasgow itself is 585,090 and 1,749,154 in the urban areas surrounding the city.
