A couple of weeks ago I found myself on a small aircraft bound for the Ilsand of Gurensey. I was going to be staying in St Peter Port and I was expecting to find a small, sleepy fishing village. I was pleasantly surprised!
I got a Hire Car from the Airport and began the drive to St Peter Port. I could not find my hotel at all and ended up going round and round. I ended up in Car Parks and dead ends and only just stopped myself in time from going up the pedestrian shopping area. In the end I asked a passer by who had seen me drive past 4 times already. The streets are quite narrow and I wouldn't advise anyone to hire a big car. Also you should pick up a street map. These are usually in hotels, at the Airport etc and are free.
We found our hotel and had a walk about the town which was very pretty. There was lots to do. There are sightseeing attractions such as the German Underground museum. There are plenty of shops from High St names to knick knack shops. There are many pubs which all had a friendly atmosphere. The food was lovely and there is a good choice of restaurants to suit every budget and taste. One particularly great place was Christy's. This had a wide menu and was reasonably priced. It was also buzzing and very friendly.
In the evening I was lucky enough(!) to find an Elvis Karaoke Bar. This provided great entertainment. Then there was a choice of nightclubs which shocked me as I thought the Island would only have about one! It was called 54 and it was £3 to get in and drinks were only £2.
On my next day I drove round the Island. It was very pretty and as it is only 7x9 miles you can easily drive round it in less than a day.
Altogether, Guernsey was great. I would go back. It is only a 45 minute journey, currency is the same and there is plenty to do.
