Perfect "staycation" destination (Hay-on-Wye in general)

Advantages: Everything is within walking distance, no need to drive, plus everyone is so friendly!

Disadvantages: Can get booked up ahead of time

Sadly, I have only been to Hay once and was not quite sure what to expect after reading mixed reviews online. However now I've been once I am converted and will be returning as often as possible!

We took the train to Hereford and then a taxi from the station to our hotel which did cost £40, but the buses are very infrequent. Our taxi driver was more of a guide than a cabbie and was our first taste of how friendly people in the town were going to be- a bit shocking for vicious Londoners like ourselves!

Hay is beautiful and we were lucky enough to stay at the gorgeous Tinto House B&B- the breakfasts were the highlight of the trip! Tinto House faces right onto the square so we could see the hustle and bustle of this quaint Welsh town while eating our local, home cooked breakfast. I wanted to stay forever!

Other highlights are the bookshops- obviously. Make sure you take a lot of bags as the town is mainly plastic bag free and you will find yourself buying piles and piles of books that you never realised you needed!

The best place to eat was the Blue Boar pub on the main road- the lamb stew was to die for and it's a perfect place to curl up with a drink and one of your new books for the afternoon.

In summary, I can't recommend Hay enough- if you like pubs, bookshops, walking and eating then you will find something here to entertain you. I promise you will be converted too!
