Hendra Holiday Park (Cornwall)
Advantages: everything about it is an advantage
Disadvantages: can be a little pricey
Ive been going to hendra holiday park for the past 16 years+. In fact i starting going with my parents and now i take my own children and ive watched as they have added and taken away certain things on the site.
To start with booking the holiday was really easy to do, we didnt have to go to a travel agents or anything, when i first wet with my parents we did it through the sun holidays but quickly figured that 5 days wasnt enough. Me and my partner took our kids in octobr 2011 for a week and found it really cheap for a saturday to saturday holiday. We looked online at their website and was able to price it up without any problem. It gave us the option to book it through the website but we did it over the phone. We had to put a deposit down just like any other place but the deposit was only £78 no matter how much the holiday came up to. It also gave us until 8 weeks before the holiday to pay the rest of the amount which took alot of stress off.
My brother and his chrildren came too and we asked if we could be in the caravan next to him, it was only an extra £10 to do this. We also had to pay £50 key deposit which we got back through the post after we came home. It came via cheque which isnt a problem for most but people without a bank account may struggle.
After booking we got our letter through the post within a couple of days confirming the holiday and they also sent us an email aswell.
Checking in was quick and easy. We didnt pay for the early check in (£50) but we arrived at 12:30pm and we could go straight into the caravan instead of waiting around until 4pm.
The caravan smelt fresh and everything was clean, we had the 6 to 8 berth caravan and my brother had 4 to 6 berth but we honestly couldnt tell the difference other than the fact that we had an extra room. They are very roomy infact when all 7 of us was in our caravan we still could move around without any problems. There is alot of cupboards in the living area so you can keep things hidden and there is substantial cupboard space in the bedrooms to unpack. The 2 rooms with the twin beds are quite small though but the main bedroom is huge. We had a dressing table with mirror in there which i loved because i could put all my girly things out without having to stuff them into a bag.
The kitchen was complete with everything you need, cooker, microwave and all your cutlery and pots and pans. very easy to clean because everything was white and steel. the kitchen area was a little small but thats not a problem because there is normally only one person in the kitchen at a time anyway. There was a seperate dining area too.
I have to note that all the caravans are all non smoking but they do provide ashtrays for smokers so you can stand just outside the door and have somewhere to put your used cigs.
Bedding is also provided except your bottom sheets, we didnt know this because my mum always brought our own anyway so thats what we did too but if you dont want to bring your own sheets then the site does hire them out at a small charge of around £4.50
On site you have pretty much everything you need. There is an indoor pool with changing rooms (however they are not seperate gender rooms it is just one big room). 3 fun slides, one for the smaller children, one with rubber rings and another that is very fast. A baby pool and the main pool that slowly deepens to around 1.2 metres. There is also a rapids section for the older children and adults. You have to pay for the indoor pool and you are offered a discount on tickets when you book your holiday, we didnt because we wasnt going to visit the pool that often but if you or your children love swimming i would deffinatly recommend doing this, although it was only £2.50 per person and you have to take you park passes to prove you are on site.
Out door pool is one big pool that has been cut into sections of different depths. there is a baby pool here too and sun loungers all the way around the pool too. In peak season they open up the small shop they have that sell ice creams and soft drinks and there is toilets with changing areas outside too. If you are on site then you dont have to pay but again you need to take your passes to prove that you are staying on site.
Marios is a pizza take away and restaurant. You can either sit inside that is nicely decorated with wooden tables and chairs and the music isnt too loud. The prices are not too bad either with pizzas starting from around £5.00. There is normally offers too which helps if you have alot of people to feed. From placing your order and recieving it takes around 20 minutes and you can ask for it to be take away so you can eat in the comfort of your own caravan.
There are 3 seperate parks for the children to play on. Each park has different things on them so the kids dont get bored and its everything from swings to slides to climbing frames, everything you would expect really.
2 arcades are also on site, 1 is on its own on the main island onsite. it has an upstairs and down and also has bowling. The second arcade is in the sports bar, children are allowed in there and that one closes a little earlier that the other one, it does have great customer service and the change machines are always full.
The cabaret bar upstairs features everything from comedians to singers, the dj and 4 other people keep the children entertained for the first couple of hours playing games and meeting hendras mascot Henry the hippo, they also bring in other mascots from other places i.e sammy the seal from the blue reef aquarium and furdy the fox from flambards. There is alot of singing and dancing for the kids and they really seemm to enjoy it. There is a tuck shop for the kids in the bar too so if they want crisps and chocolate they dont have to go to the bar.The bar can get busy but they serve quickly and pleasently. Bingo for the adults starts around 9.30 at night and the cash prizes are very generous. Cabaret starts after the bingo is finished and the whole bar closes around 1am. The toilets are clean and stocked with toilet roll and there is also security just in case although i have never witnessed anything happen whilst we have been staying there.
there is also a shop that sells pretty much everything you need plus some things you would like to buy for the people at home although it can be a little pricey and most people go to the superstore at the bottom of the road just outside of hendra. Its around a 2 minute drive away and is situated next to a mcdonalds.
They have little vans constantly partolling the site to and you can not drive onto the site without a hendra sticker on your rearview mirror so security is quite tight but you dont feel like your being watched all the time which is great.
Hendra is situated about 10 minutes drive from Newquay town centre and Newquey and Fistral beach. There are alot more beachs around that take anything between 20 minutes to an hour to get there but the drive is worth it to see the scenery and the enjoyment on the childrens faces.
i would recommend anyone to go to hendra for their holiday if they are staying in britian. Its not too expensive to book for a week and they also take the sun holiday vouchers too. The site is beautiful and the caravans are not parked to closely together. you can park you car at the side of the van although there is a couple of caravans that you have to park it at the top of the caravan due to the slope of the ground in certain areas but nothing to complain about, they have a lauderette and an ironing room if you wish to wah some of your clothes whilst there.
Anyone with children and anyone without kids would love this site, its fun for all ages and a really good holiday.
Summary: a great british holiday site
