Henham is a lovely little village just north west of Bishops Stortford. It is very close to the M11 and also to Stansted Airport, but I have to say I hadn’t even heard of the place until my sister, Helen and her partner went to live there! I was just in the process of making a list of things to remember to take when we go to visit next weekend and I had the urge to write an opinion! You know how it is! Seriously though, I thought I would write an opinion about Henham in general, and also tell you specifically about the bed and breakfast establishment located in the village. The place in question is called Pleasant Cottage and it is a grade 2 listed part thatched building. It is set on the corner of the village green at the top of the main road through Henham. I use the term ‘main road’ loosely you understand. Henham isn’t a very big village at all. The cottage is quite a small place only having 3 bedrooms, two doubles and one twin. They are in the process of making all three rooms fully en suite – I’ll let you know how they’re getting on after the weekend! The cottage itself is fascinating. There are nooks and crannies everywhere! To get to the room that mom and dad used when we last stayed we had to go up the stairs, turn right, along a landing, turn left, down some stairs, across and back up some stairs to get to the room! It made me think of books I had read as a child about houses with secret passages! I felt like I should be knocking on the walls to see if any hidden panels opened! The floors slope in random directions due to the age of the property but this just adds to its charm! Mind you walking uphill from one side of the bedroom to the other is a strange experience, especially when you’re still sober! The rooms are well furnished and spotlessly clean and equipped with tea and coffee making facilities and televisions. Breakfast is served a t a time to suit individual guests as Pleasant Cottage is only 5 miles away from Stansted Airport so they get a lot of guests stopping there the night before an early morning flight. The breakfast is served in the lovely little breakfast room, which also has a sitting area and views out into the pretty gardens. The traditional English breakfast is delicious and there is plenty of it, so you’re well set up for your day sightseeing or waiting for your plane at Stansted! The cottage has a no smoking policy in the bedrooms and it does not have facilities for young children, so bear these facts in mind if you’re considering staying there. The details of the B & B are as follows: Pleasant Cottage Woodend Green Henham Bishops Stortford Herts CM22 6AZ 01279 850792 The current price for the double en suite room is £58 per room per night, and for the other rooms, £48 per room per night. Henham itself is the sort of village that I always pictured in my mind as an idyllic place to live. With duck ponds and village greens and cottages with roses and honeysuckle scrambling up round the doors, it really is a lovely place. I speak here as an outsider you understand, not as one who is trying to buy a property there! I think a large brandy would be in order before you look at the house prices! Better wait till we win the lottery then! The village has just one shop, which I am informed by Helen is run on a rota basis by locals, otherwise it would have closed down. There is a lovely 13th century church which I didn’t get chance to visit last time we were there, but hope to do so this time. There is also a village pub called The Cock, which funnily enough we did visit last time we there and we intend to go again! The food served there is superb and is a reasonable price too. If you intend to have Sunday lunch there it is advisable to book in advance, as the restaurant a rea is quite small. In conclusion Henham really is a beautiful village and would make an ideal base for touring the area or even for visiting London, which is only 40 minutes away by train.
