On a recent visit to Guernsey, I decided to take day trip to Herm, something I would highly recommend to anyone visiting that part of the world. Although we really like Guensey, the thing I loved mosst about Herm was it's Mediteranean holiday feel (although we were lucky to have great weather, i'm not sure it has the same effect if it is raining) and the peace and tranqui;ity of the island.

Why choose Herm?
Herm is a small island in comparison to some of the better known Channel Islands and bec ause of that very quiet. It has beautiful sandy beaches and clear blue waters which make it an appealing place to visit and explore. It also has a range of foot paths (none of which that we used needed any special footwear) that take you across cliffes and along country paths. Like the more famous island Sark it does not have cars but be prepared to move out of the way of the tractors that pass.

Things to do.
As I said before Herm is very small and one option is to spend your time on Herm walking right around the island. Other activities available on the island are fishing, clay pigeon shooting, kayaking or if you are very lucky relaxing on the beautiful sandy beach sunbathing and swimming. We chose to spend our day walking and on the beach. We did some kayaking as well which was great fun and reasoanably priced.

Shops and Restaurants
With Herm being such a small island, you are quite limited about where you eat and drink. However I have to say the Mermaid Tavern where we ate lunch and had a tipple or two was fantastic. Very reasonable prices and great food. The selection of drinks, alcoholic and non were also very good. There were a few other options too which for a small isalnd I was surprised about.
I also spent a while in the gift shop. This was a small shop that had everything I could need while visiting the island. It had a range of clothes, inflactables, sun cream, hats etc. all the essentials that you may have forgotten along with a wide selection of gits and toys. I spent much longer than I should have done browsing in this shop.

Staying in Herm
Now I have had to research this as I only went for the day but there are options to stay over night on Herm. There is a range of accommodation to choose from including hotels, self catering cottages and camping. This is definitely an option I would consider if I went again as the last boat left at 17:35 and I would have loved to have watched the sunset on Herm.

Gettin there
We went by boat from St Peter's Port in Guernsey. The prices were £11 for adults and £5.50 for children (young babies £1). The boat ran all year round however the times did vary. In the summer we had a range of times to choose from, the earliest being 08:30 and they ran roughly every hour. The journey took 20 minutes.

My opinion
We had an absolutely fantastic day on Herm and have spoken about going back but for longer next time. For such a small island there really is so much to see and do. It is peaceful and definitely a good place to escape the craziness of modern day life. Highly recommended for a day trip or a few nights stay.
