My partner and I returned from a holiday last week at Illfracombe. I'm sorry to say that it was a very poor stay. The staff were not very friendly at all, they didn't make us feel welcome.The site is situated on a large hill that causes untold aggravation to get to and attempt to walk anywhere on foot.The service was dire and the food was over priced and horrid.The entertainment was all aimed at children and there was nothing for adults at all.Overall it was a very bad holiday and we won't be returning.

MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT, YOU WILL FIND IT HARD TO FIND A HOLIDAY COMPANY THAT OFFERS SUCH EXCELLENT VALUE FOR THE MONEY YOU PAY.... and it is WORTH NOTING, THAT IF YOU MAKE FURTHER BOOKINGS WITH THEM, YOU WILL BE GIVEN V.I.P. JOHN FOWLER HOLIDAYS accommodations are primarily intended for self catering, are very well equipped for doing so (Microwaves, cookers, toasters, kettles tea pots, saucepans, frying pans, cutlery and crockery) sufficient for your party's needs for self catering, in a clean and hygienic kitchen setting, then for those who wish to spend their holiday strictly to a planned budget, then that is fine. You can either bring your own food, purchase from the on-site shop, or take a trip to a nearby supermarket. However, the clubhouse has a 'Chef's Corner' which is where you can go and sit down for a choice of meals from their menu; alternatively catch a bus, or drive into town for a pub meal, or a meal at a restaurant or café. We have always chosen to eat out. We personally choose not spend our time being tied down to preparing meals, cooking, and washing up afterwards, but to use that time enjoying on-site facilities, and/or go into the nearby town or visit places of interest. Of course everyone is different. If you enjoy spending your time self catering, then JOHN FOWLER HOLIDAY SITE accommodation is the ideal place to enjoy your own cooking and eating.
The size of each holiday site varies, and so do their clubhouses. ILFRACOMBE has a considerably large clubhouse which provide its holidaymakers with a good variety of entertainment. Likewise with Brixham, Trelawne Manor, and St Ives are of the larger type. However, we have in the past 14 years had a preference to book up for Sandaway Bay holiday site, Coombe Martin, Ilfracombe for the simple reason we find it a little more peaceful. We like the clubhouse, the staff have always been polite and friendly. It has a fantastic view across the bay into the Bristol Chanel. Ilfracombe town and harbour is a short drive away. If you like fish and chips, whether they be take away, eaten from your hand, or you choose to sit down within the fish and chip shop/restaurant/café, then Ilfracombe harbour is the place to go and enjoy daily caught fresh fish fried in crispy golden brown batter. There are several gift shops, and vendors selling Devonshire, and Cornish ice creams in umpteen flavours. If you enjoy fresh cockles, mussels, and other shellfish, they are available at shops at the harbour quayside. Car parking, just as so many other cities, towns and seaside resorts is available at a charge per hourly rate or multiple hours thereof. There are no concessions for 'disabled parking' places within the car parks. Ilfracombe town centre however, does provide disabled drivers with roadside parking bays, clearly marked as such.
The main John Fowler's holiday site, and head office, is approximately 3 miles from Ilfracombe Harbour. It is situated a nearby comparatively large Tesco Store, where prices are set to their national price guide. What you pay at \Tesco's Supermarket at or near your home town, you can expect to pay the same at Ilfracombe. Overall, and in general, our rating for JOHN FOWLER HOLDAYS in the Devon and Cornwall sites we have visited, have been very enjoyable. They have been excellent value for money. The standard of cleanliness as maintained by the cleaning staff of our apartment, each time, at whatever site we have holidayed at, has always been 'A1'.
As aforementioned, we do have our preferences of holiday site. We prefer to holiday at JOHN FOWLERS HOLIDAY site at Sandaway Bay, Coombe Martin, Ilfracombe, North Devon. We choose to holiday normally in March/April or September/ October, which we consider to be of a very good price that suits our pockets. We take a gamble on the weather, and have in the past been lucky enough to have had a dry and mild climate. However, this March has proved to be extremely bitterly cold, far from ideal for holidaying in any shape or form. One can hardly blame JOHN FOWLER HOLIDAYS for that ! We do not live in a perfect world; what can go wrong, will at some time or other go wrong, JOHN FOWLER HOLIDAYS not excluded. Our personal experience of holdays spent over a period of 14 consecutive years at JOHN FOWLER HOLIDAYS sites have always been very enjoyable ones. If we experience a problem with our stay at a site, and are not happy, then we bring it to the attention of site management. If it is genuine, and a justified complaint, then where and when the matter can be put right, the matter will be put right. Finally, and having considered all, we would be somewhat unfair in giving JOHN FOWLER HOLIDAYS a lesser rating than 'FIVE STARS' for looking after the pockets of the average person and providing a far better than average holiday. I'm sorry to say i have never been to a place like it.We had two caravans there was ten of us you try and cook for that many with two just working burners and one oven shelve for oven and grill it was a joke to light the grill and oven you had to turn the gas on and hold it in then put your head in the oven with the match alight and find where to light it talk about health and safety.To go swimming pool opens at ten or it says ten but not always on time then you only get forty five minutes at a time then you have to queue up again no showers sitting about in wet swim suits not good not that warm that was one thing the brochure was show the swimming pool on the front off there advert nothing like it.The food is very basic not very good at all they say food in the day that's if you like pies, no sandwiches or rolls or even jacket potatoes for lunch. On one night we came back early went to the bar my husband and son bought three drinks which were charged nineteen pounds i check there price list they where over charge by six pounds how many times do they do that i did get my money back for that.I am an old owner of a static caravan in bashley park so do know what is good and bad and what is reasonable or not and i think this park is not a family park children really don't have much to do small park two swings and a bit of a climbing thing with a slide nothing during the day club wise either.I'm sorry to say i probably go on about much more so i will not be going back to John Fowler's parks again ..
well what can i say the place is a tip.grease all over the kitchen and mould on the walls.could not walk around in bare feet as you would be scared to catch something...oh we did FLEAS.now had to spend 60 pound to have our home cleaned with spray.dont ever go there it should be pulled down and burnt,the food in the clubhouse still part frozen when you get it and the restaurant over the road is not much better.they buy the bottled beer from tesco up the road and sell it to you for nightclub prices.the most unkept filthy place i have ever had the misfortune to stay in.oh and don't expect the tv to work its a hiss and snow scene and thats in all the chalets not just the one we suffered in
Booked in for a weekend in a carnation chalet no 37. it did'nt smell like a carnation it smelt of dogs.tiolet and shower was very basic you can not wash. very small wash basin. bed was a board with a very thin matress the chalet was damp and not clean. chairs were torn leg falling off one of them we left a day early thats how bad it was.
I have recently returned from John Fowler Ilfracombe. After booking our week at this site we looked up the site and were worried after reading the reviews but was pleasantly surprised we were directed to our apartment by a very helpful receptionist we were aware of being in a bronze styled accomondation due to having two dogs, the unit was fine no smells, mould or funny looking stains very basic and in need of a lick of paint on the outside but was fine. We turned the water on at the mains and went to the onsite shop which was very overpriced and did not even have your basics ok if you want pizza and roast potatoes for tea, its a good job tescos is only a 5 minute walk away. When we returned we found we had no hot water which we informed reception of and within 15 minutes a very helpful maintance guy came to fix it which he did try but the boiler was not having any of it we were moved we were first shown a small bedsit which was down grading us and refused we were given a royal gold apartment which was beautiful a new build we were very happy. Entertainment wise what a complete nightmare the outside entertainment was not to bad but my god the entertainment team was very repetative only seemed to knowq one party dance even the children were getting bored if I hear stand up sit down not fast enough I will scream you could literally see less and less people turning up each night. We had three nights out of the seven of them singing they even sang the same songs again and again, I was very disapointed with the entertainment and will never go to john fowlers ever again this site is ok if you would rather stay in your apartment but come on John Folwer people are on holiday sort out your entertainments
Was booked in for four nights at this park only stayed one chalet smelt had to buy air freshener we do have a dog but have stayed in places with dogs before never had that problem. Bed was like sleeping on a board if you wanted shower you had to stand at the end of the bath as the shower head could not be altered. toilet roll was on toilet brush handle as centre was missing from toilet roll holder that was still fixed to the wall. Looked at four different mugs before I found two that were not stained. Curtains fell off rails when opened. Whole place was a disgrace unhygenic and I would never go there again filler in the ceiling grout in the bathroom not finished wished I had read these before I booked would not go there again.
Just got back from John Flower holiday in Cornwall St Ives holiday village. This is one of the worst times we have every had on holiday the accommodation was very damp the bath room had a bath that was only 4 foot long so that ruled that out. Shower was above bath but there was a window above the bath wooden window. This was rotten from the amount of water thrown on it from showering. This widow should have toughened glass in it due to the danger of falling but was not fitted. Bath room measured four feet square .with a Bath,w/c and small hand basin.All the switches to the appliances we upside down. General site conditions were very poor in deed.
There was a brand new log cabin on display for £74.999 why anyone would want to buy a property on this site I don't know. But don't go looking for it I think it's been repossessed as it was there when we went out but it had gone by the time we got back. There was the decking left smashed to bits were it was sited

We have visited St Ives Holiday Village on many occasions and have always had a good holiday. If there
have been any problems with the chalets allocated we have always been treated politely by the staff and moved to a better chalet. The site is set out beautifully and the chalets are well spaced out. Yes some of the older budget chalets are in need of replacement furniture and mattresses but there was a programme of refurbishment which seems to have halted in the last few years.
In April this year we visited Widemouth Bay and stayed in a three bedroomed caravan, no. 306, next to the playground. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the caravan and the size. The playground next door was never a problem. The security staff patrolled the site at night and there was no trouble whilst we were there. The entertainment was not special but it was early in the seaon. If you go to Widemouth Bay
you usually go because of the beautiful beach not the shops the nearest of which are in Bude, but not a great selection.
We are going to Combe Martin site next week and hopefully we will be pleased as usual.
There are only the two of us now but we have visited JFH sites with children and other family and no-one has had any real problem.
Ilfracoombe is a beautiful Cornish village worthy of better than the flea pit that is john fowlers holiday village.
4 adults and 2 children in a six berth chalet should be a pleasurable experience right? WRONG!!
We felt like we were staying in an inner city tenement building where the window wouldn't shut and you could see out of the front door through the gap underneath!
All the beds were of inferior quality and very uncomfortable,in fact my wife and i only slept on the bed setee for one night and opted for the far superior comfortable floor for the remaining two. There wasn't a comfortable seat in the place and the dining chairs that were provided were loose and unsafe to sit on.
The shower was a disgrace-a combined rubber tube approximately two feet long with a shower head on that dribbled water does not constitute a 'power shower'!!!
if you want to experience how people lived in prefabs during the blitz then this is the place for you but if not then stay the hell away from this run down poorly maintained filthy sh*thole!!
this is the first john fowler site ive been to and it will be the last ILFRACOOMBE its a dump DOG FRIENDLY the only thing dog friendly is they charged us £40 POOL it was dirty CLUB HOUSE it was cean enough but expensive FARMHOUSE RESTURANT when they got the order right and we finally got our meal it was supprisingly good. the best advice i can give is GIVE IT A WIDE BERTH
Just got back from a week at the St Ives Site where to begin, woodland setting great, accomodation terrible, started with a wasps nest in the kitchen complained managers not botherd but changed our chalet, got into chalet damp and smelly but thought would get better once heating turned on but hey inadequate heating. Windows had to be forced open as they had been painted badly. Cooking facilities, frying pan took three days to arrive grill pan never showed up (was probably at haven on holiday). Complained to both site managers and head office don't reply but not giving up. Pool absolute waste of time closed most of the week slide out of order sauna was not complete, games room pool table yes latest arcade games no chance. To be frank save your money and don't waste your time. One plus though the entertainment team were fantastic which was good as it made it okay for the kids.
John fowler holiday park near Newquay. Looks like a prison camp people how run it prison wardens. We have 5 kids and they to us not to bring our own drinks when a round is over £20 pound pool shuts at 5 but on the door it says 6. Verdicts like sleeping under a towel there so fin nite life there is nothing to do WILL NOT BE BACK. cheap holiday but pay for what you get and that's not alot with mr John fowler holiday parks. A week in weston would be better. Take not people looks like a prison treated like an inmate
I am quite surprised looking at these other reviews. We've stayed at John Fowler parks five times now and always found the accommodation very clean and good quality. We stayed at Trelawne Manor back in 2002 in a gold caravan and the caravan was in very good condition. We stayed there again a couple of years ago. We have also stayed at Ilfracombe in a Royal Gold Apartment. This was absolutely lovely - well fitted out and equipped and spotlessly clean. Last September we stayed at Killigarth Manor. It was our second visit. The first time we stayed in a caravan, basic but clean and fully equipped. This time we stayed in a Royal Gold Lodge. I can't praise it enough. It was absolutely spotless and furnished and decorated to a very high quality. We were delighted with it, so much so that we are going again this year. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. We were told the lodge had a washing machine. When we got there it actually had a washer/dryer. However, the dryer wasn't working. We reported it to housekeeping as we didn't want them to think we had broken it. The housekeeping staff got someone out to fix it, but the engineer needed to send for a part which wouldn't arrive while we were still there. Instead, the housekeeper collected our washing every day, took it away and dried it for us, returning it to us in the afternoon. They had no reason to do so as we weren't even expecting a dryer, in fact our lodge was the only one with a dryer in it. They just did it anyway which we found to be really helpful. They couldn't have been more polite and more friendly. The camp shop was well stocked with friendly staff and the family all loved the swimming pool and the sauna. The park is in the most fabulous setting with fantastic views and close to the gorgeous little town of Polperro and to Looe. Okay, it's not Haven or Butlins, but you get what you pay for. We use the park as a base for touring around Cornwall. If you want to spend most of your time on site I probably wouldn't recommend it as it is very basic in facilities, but if you want somewhere to stay while you travel round Cornwall that is clean and well equipped and in a lovely location for a very good price then I would definitely recommend Killigarth Manor Royal Gold Lodge. Book early and get it half price as we always do!
