Leigh on Sea is a lovely little town in South Essex, it is part of the greater area of Southend on sea and is bordered by Westcliff and Hadleigh.
Leigh on Sea has a long history and was even mentioned in the Domesday book.
The main feature of Leigh has always been its fishing heritage which is still alive today in Old leigh, where fishermen regulary sell their catch from the Cockle Sheds.
Primarily, leigh has always been a small parish town, but when property prices rose and more and more people from surrounding suburbs moved to the area, the house prices rose dramatically and the area became more cosmopolitan, with bars cafes and boutiques opening up, which led to a change in the area and the type of people who live there. This appears to be changing now though, as the recession is forcing hairdressers and bars to close, and houses which were bought to let are being sold at lower prices. This could have an effect on changing the area back into the community that it once was when I first visited in the 1960s, which would not be a bad thing despite the lack of revenue that such business provides for the local council.
Living in London, leigh on sea is the perfect day away, and getting the train from Fenchurch Street Station to leigh on sea is always a pleasure, as you visibly see the difference in Landscape as you get further away from London.

The fresh cockles are amazing!
