      Lewes and Nearby

Lewes is situated in the South Downs which is a very beautiful part of the South East and it is steeped with amazing history and buildings to see.

Lewes Town Hall was in the 14th century an inn which the monks of Southover Priory owned When you go inside the building there you will come across an amazing staircase

Lewes Castle is a must when you come to Lewes it is a very grand building and it is steeped with history. The castle was built after the invasions of the Normans in 1066. It stands over looking the town and when you are up at the castle when you look down the views are very spectacular.

Barbican House Museum is situatated below the castle of Lewes and it has many collections of historic interest and tells you the story of how the town of Lewes came about.

Anne of Cleves house was given to her by Henry VIII as part of her divorced settlement. This is a typical type of house which you see round Sussex it is a timber framed house and it is Wealden Hall House.

Just about four miles out of Lewes there is the National Trust Property Monk House which is another place to go an visit. It is situated in the village Rodmell.

It was bought by Virginia Woolf and Leonard her husband who was the leading person of the Bloomsbury Group. The house is not that large and it is a weatherboard building in the main street of Rodmell . The garden is big and there is a very good view overlooking the river Ouse and the hills. While Virginia and her husband was living there they did a lot of entertaing and inviting many well known literary an artistic people such as Vita Sackville-West,E.M.Forster,T.S Elliot are just a few that visted Monk House.

        Lovely

Lewes, East Sussex, my home town for 21 years!

Its a wonderful town for locals and a definate day trip for tourists of people interested in a bit of history.

The cobbled streets and quant, beautuful buildings will be a treat for a classic town lover.

Although the shops in Lewes arent great, there are plenty of bauitque style shops, but you shuld expect to pay a little of the expected price,.. Or there are plenty of chartity shops, which are always filled with amazing clothes, discarded from the many wealthy households!

Lewes in now, know for its hundered of Pubs and rediculous number of restaurant, so if you want a night out- there is plenty to choose from in Lewes.

If you are after a bit of history, there is plenty. There is Lewes Castle, which is a lovely place to vistit and the well worth a look.

As the is the Anna on Cleves House, which is the original house of the henry the 8ths Wife. This is a great day out for all the family, with activities for the kids to get involved in!

Lewes is also very vclose to Brighton and Eastbourne to seaside towns, with plenty to do!
