Advantages: Same old London, Full of excitement

Disadvantages: Bit messy, Bit grubby

Even as kids London had a special buzz and excitement. I still feel it today when I rock up in the smoke on business or pleasure.I have some friends in Crystal Palace who I stayed with last weekend for the excellent athletics.
They are paying 900 pounds per month for a twin bed flat in a district that is at least three trains and an hour out on the bus. Anyhow I had a few days to have some fun so I jumped off the grotty Thameslink train with glee and chewing gum sticking to my Timberlands at Marble arch.

The tourist are buzzing everywhere like the near by politicians at Westminster around consultancy jobs and kickbacks during the idle summer months. Where as the Mps can slipoff on junkets to foreign climes,I have to have three days in the capitol chaos.
First day was a walk up to the Tate modern full of pretentious crap and “space”. It’s free to get in and sits well next to the Shakespeare’s theatre. But wasn’t worth the visit, although the pleasant stroll between the taxis was bracing.

A more worthy stroll was to the newly renovated British museum and the majestic book dome. The light pouring in through the glass ceiling works so well against the limestone walls and marbled floor. The famous disaster of the mismatching limestone isn’t so obvious as I thought and sits well in the buildings grandeur.
There was a small charge to enter the reading area although a donation was all that was requested to visit the main antiquities. The Egypt room was especially groovy man, like the mummy movie dudes. Apart from that though it was all rusty swords and native Indian yawn.

On too The London Eye and a 45-minute spin then pasta in Camden Town.Although London is grubby and obtuse in buildings and flow, there are places you can dissolve into the night and eclectic mix and atmosphere.
But although one of the worlds greatest cites, London is just not sexy and rather money obsessed over beauty and constr
uction. Washington DC has beautiful blocks of buildings and free access all around. San Francisco has beauty and undulation. London is just functional and hectic.

London’s great parks and Palaces save the day offering space and fresh air away from the black and red blur of taxis and buses. Hyde Park is a sea of energy and athleticism after a hard days work and tourism. Baseballs and harder fizz by your ears like world war one trenches.
What away to relax after a hard day on the trading floors to the humdrum of a sweaty office and computer. Green and St James offer a tantalizing glimpse of cream palace walls or a fluttering royal standard between lush green lime tree fauna.
The Serpentine stunning view of Buck house leads you to the gates to see the PR trooping that keeps the ruck sack packers flowing in to London’s manic airports that fill the sky with groaning screeching superliners.

As a kid I remember jamming my head through the palace bars to see the weird hatted soldiers do their thing. This time around the scene was exactly the same but with half of the feeling of old. I’m still keen on keeping a royal family and the awe in the eyes of the whispering tourist and sunlight kissing the golden gates was mesmeric.
Our pomp and ceremony is unrivaled and we would be crazy to throw it all away, however lavish it may seem.
Kensington Palace didn’t grab me, as I was not a fan of the Sloney leech and garish wasteful lifestyle of her early vulgarity and access. A quick zip down to Downing Street and home to Crystal Palace.

Day two took me past the famous high court building that’s on TV more then Davina Macall.Through the city and bars full of Essex boys and stretched pants on public school puffs. Shopping is not my thing so Kensington street and the Arabs were no honored with my warn out Billabong T-shirt and Oxfam shorts.
The bars of Covent Garden were the evening and night’s entertainmen
t, as 8pm quickly became midnight.

It’s too expensive to live in and too fast for a townie like me.I cant imagine a tour hour journey on the cramped sweaty trains day in day out.One would be so tired after a days graft that they could never enjoy this cosmopolitan melting pot.
Its not quite my cup ot tea and I prefer the style of European cities over our capitals jumbled din and collection of everything. Ok im jealous of all you who live in the action……

Nice observations. London has a certain buzz about it It's a great place just to sit at a bar or cafe and watch the world go by which is less energetic than joining in!
