Advantages: Cheap, Easy to get to, Interesting
Disadvantages: Drugs, Crime
I?ve visited Camden several times now and it is certainly one of my favourite parts of London. Well first of all, where is Camden? It?s in northwest London and can be easily reached by tube or bus. If travelling by tube Camden Town is on the Northern Line (the black coloured line on a London Underground map). Buses run to Camden from most major points in London. With tube fares and bus fares being very cheap public transport is by far the best way of getting to Camden. I would strongly advice against going by car. There is little parking and traffic is also bad, Camden is also not the safest place in the world to leave your car.
Camden is very famous for its markets, though don?t worry its not like the type of market that you see on EastEnders selling cheap and tacky clothes and ?a bag of grapes for a quid?. Camden Market is interesting and unique. If your looking for music you can buy everything from that old corny 80?s record to unsigned punk bands to underground house music. If its clothes you want you can relive that hippie era by visiting one of the many stalls on Camden market selling hippie clothes. Or if you want to brighten up your house there are stalls on Camden market selling interesting looking rugs, individual ornaments ? whatever your looking for you will find it at Camden Market. That includes not so legal things.... Camden has a big drugs culture. If you?re in Camden expect to be offered drugs, people will mainly come up to you and ask if you want to buy weed. Though some might try and sell you harder drugs. Just say no. If you say something like ?Okay, so how much?? then they will never leave you alone. If you say no straight away they will just leave you and go onto their next potential customer. And even if you do cannabis Camden is not the place to buy it. I have heard of some people being mugged by people trying to sell them cannabis.
Okay, so far I have made Camden out to have interesting markets selling delightful things. W
ell that is true but many stalls on Camden market also sell tack. ? Fake watches, bongs, cheap lighters, ?legal? highs, poppers, etc. Though some of those fake Zippo lighters aren?t bad....
When you?ve had enough of shopping on the main outdoor market make sure to check out the Electric Ballroom. The Electric Ballroom is an indoor market, its only open weekends though. It has a wide variety of stuff, mainly handcrafts and clothing though. Also, if you are into arts, crafts and alternative medicine you should visit the Market Hall. It?s not really my cuppa tea but having been dragged there a couple of times I can say that its quite interesting and that there are far worse places to be in London! And anyway if you?re into that sort of stuff you?ll love it!
If you visit Camden make sure to explore, have a good look around. Don?t just stay around the station. It?s quite a big area and there?s lots of stuff, some of it quite hidden away. Though if your own you should be quite careful still and try to only stay in busier parts of Camden. Take a bit more care if you go past the market up on to Chalk Farm Rd.
When you want something to eat there is loads of choice. Don?t just go to the McDonald?s, there are great small places that are really cheap. In Camden Lock Market there is a brilliant takeaway place selling Chinese food, its really cheap and very tasty. About £3 I think and there?s loads of choice. When I?ve been in Camden with mates we?ve went to the Kebab shop on the high street before, I love kebabs though they are not the healthiest option. And kebab shops in general have a reputation for being a little unhygienic ? so god knows what went into that lamb kebab I ate...
Overall Camden is a superb place. If you?ve got friends over and don?t know where to take them in London take them to Camden. Its fun and won?t cost you loads of money. It?s a really interesting place; okay its maybe not the place to take your grandparents, as the
y might not be too impressed with certain aspects of Camden. If you?re going to visit Camden I would recommend that you visit on a Sunday. Sunday is a good day to visit Camden because there are more stalls open at weekends and it?s also not as busy on a Sunday as it is on a Saturday.
