Advantages: great bands in an intimate venue., good sound system, lots of variety of events
Disadvantages: no variety for teetotalers, no cloakroom, can feel claustrophobic
The Academy is a small music venue within the university campus but is open to the public including under 18s. The electronics and sound equipment at the venue are great especially the white screen and projector behind the stage which gives an extra dimension to the performance. There are two places within the venue to buy drinks but the choice is very limited (at the one in the same room as the stage only beer, lager and water is available) and there is no area for coats or bags. The bands that play at the venue are varied but on average i have found that it is a third more expensive here than at the alternative in Liverpool.
The venue is used every Tuesday for the student market. Regular stalls include second hand books, jewellry, clothing, posters, bean bags and tarot-reading. On the whole it is interesting to look around and there are some bargains to be had. Having said that, it is not really somewhere where you can find something new every week. Also the venue is dark so it is difficult to see products in a natural light. This might seem like a minor point but it is easy to mistake navy for black here!
Also every Tuesday is the student club night 'Club Tropicana'. This is cheap and cheerful night which plays 80s and early 90s cheesy pop music. I found this night very claustrophobic but it is very popular with cheap drinks offers. When i went free sweets and cadburys mini rolls were offered on entry. A tip for going to Club Trop is that ultra violet is used so make sure your underwear is dark or well covered!
In conclusion, the Academy is a great venue for concerts and has events held weekly. However, it is pricier than other venues i have been to in other cities. Also, there could be better security features such as a cloakroom.
