Well, since the last review was written (2002) I would like to let everybody know just how much Maryport has changed, for the better. Maryport is my home town (I live in a village on the outskirts of Maryport). Locally, Maryport is surrounded by stereotypical judgements such as "it is rough...it has loads of drugs etc") But let me ask a rhetorical question, how many places don't have drug users, and how many places don't have "rough" areas?!? Maryport is a coastal town on the Solway estuary and as such has fantastic scenic value. On clear days you can clearly see the coast of Scotland and also in the distance you are able to spot the Isle of Man. Being on the coast means, unsurprisingly, you are able to take advantage of beautiful shoreline walks along "The Promenade" and feel the fresh sea breeze (perfect for a hangover cure!). Away from the scenery, Maryport holds one of the largest in-door karting tracks in the country (West Coast Karting). West Coast Karting is a great outing for any petrol head be them 6 or 106! ----------Other Attractions---------- # The Wave - a revolutionary ~£3million Entertainment, Conferencing and Heritage Visitor Centre. # Lake District Coast Aquarium (see my other review). # Maritime Museum - tells the story of the docks, the town, and Maryport's most famous characters such as Henry Ismay (the founder of the White Star - "Titanic") and the family of Fletcher Christian of the Mutiny on the Bounty. # Maryport Golf Club - situated on the Solway Firth - relax, practice your swing and take in the scenery. # Senhouse Roman Museum - based in a Victorian Naval Reserve Batterym this award winning museum houses the largest collection of Roman altars from a single site in Britain. # The Harbour Lights Project - a series of permanent contemporary art instalations set in and around the historic harbour. ----------Eateries---------- Maryport has a range of different eateries to suit everybody's appetite. Whether you are fancying the traditional Fish 'N' Chips, a quick takeaway, a Chinease dish, or a well presented pub meal, you will find what you are looking for! ----------Festivals---------- Each year Maryport host a number of different festivals in and around the town. The most famous of all is possibly The Maryport Blues Festival which has seen big names play in the past including; Jethro Tull, John Mayall, Jools Holland, Gary Moore and Chuck Berry. If you require any more information about Maryport, please feel free to write me a comment and I shall try and reply as soon as possible!
Maryport is a small, depressed town in the north west Lake District, but it does have one saving grace. It's home to the Lake District Coast Aquarium, which is "One of the best marine aquariums in Europe", according to the leaflet. When you consider that closely it doesn't seem to be making much of a claim for anything, it's like saying the Millenium Dome is one of the best domes built for the millenium. In the town there are streets in which it seems like one in four of the shops are boarded up. Given the surroundings it's hard to expect the Aquarium to be anything much.
