As you must now be able to surmise from the title, I am a rolerblader, who skates the various ledges in Milton Keynes. This is an opinion on why you see so many people on rollerblades, Skateboards and BMX's around Milton Keynes.
Being a large city that is constantly expanding, there are more and more places for Rollerbladers to skate. This is because of an apparant policy of the MK council to put marble ledges everywhere in the inner-city. This is a skaters heaven, and although it could be true that the marble ledges are corroded because of excess 'grinding'(a phrase that is given to a trick involving sliding the ledges on your skates), these ledges are irresistable to us skaters because they are a perfect height and because they slide well. As these ledges are so copious, it is also easy not to hassle or be hassled by other people in MK.
There are also may handrails which attract the more accomplished skaters from around Britain, (I know this because I have being skating with people from places such as Leicester). The rails used for 'grinding' such as those out the back of Forté Posthouse hotel, and the ones all around the quite idylic Willen lake are excellent for skaters as they are absolutelty everywhere around the city and the outer suburbs.
Security is not a problem for skaters as well. You never get any trouble from the bus drivers, or other people in the bus station, if you are skating the excellent ledges outside. An amnesty on skaters using the various spots around the city from security seems to be in effect, as you hardly ever get moved on from anywhere.
Other attractions for skaters is that their is excellent transport into and out of the city with an excellent bus service, and also a very central train station, that goes to London and other places all around.
It is a generally assumed that most people are against the skaters around MK. However, this opinion is not to justify the actions of the
minority who get a reputation for all skaters. I just wish to offer reasons why people come from far around to skate MK. I hope I have fulfilled this aim. You Decide!
