A tourist view of Minehead
Member Name: liz4199
Advantages: West Somerset Railway, beach
Disadvantages: too many Grockles
Minehead you either love it or hate it. It is nestled on the edge of the bristol estuary and at the foot of Exmoor. Minehead is famous for Butlins which can be found at the end of the town and the building is nicknamed by the locals as an upside down cow. If you see it you know what I mean. The shops consist mainly of grockle shops ( the somerset word for tourist) with a few good ones in there on the main street. It is a mix of archtectiture as you have an victorian influence and you have the older part of Minehead where the harbour is located with the Church Steps. The name minehead orignates from the welsh name meaning mountain. On may bank holiday weekend they have an event called the hobby horse which starts at daylight with a procession which is not funny being woken up at 4am with a procession. This is what started off years and years ago to stop Minehead being invaded the locals would act nutty and that would ward people off. This happens every year. Minehead does have some great tourist attractions the wonderful west somerset railiway ends here and the beach which consists of imported sand mixed in with the mud and stone. The eating places are mixed plenty of tourist pubs but there is a great italian on one of the side streets. The countryside around Minehead is very pretty and it is worth a trip just to see the views.
Summary: Minehead a visitors guide
