Advantages: Not too trendy, but still nice

Disadvantages: Public transport links aren't fantastic

With trendy Highgate on one side and charmless Bounds Green on the other, Muswell Hill provides a handy compromise. The atmosphere tends to be very laid back and the prices are sensible, but it nevertheless boasts a good selection of shops and restaurants and is a nice place to spend time. The Odeon cinema can be relied upon to show the films that are worth seeing, and there are a number of pubs.

La Porchetta, opposite Woolworths, is an Italian restaurant (you wouldn't have guessed) that gained infamy from a TV documentary that exposed the story of a customer who found a beetle in their food. However, they seem to have tightened, because when I went there last week I failed to find any small black creatures at all. The food is very good and the service is friendly.

Along Fortis Green Road (the continuation of East End Road from East Finchley) you can find a number of Chinese restaurants, most of which do Sunday lunch buffets. There is also Caffé Uno, an upmarket Italian restaurant near the roundabout. And there's always Pizza Express, though it seems a shame when there are so many places you couldn't go to anywhere else.

By the way, the title is an anagram of Muswell Hill Rocks.
