Advantages: Showed that Newcastle could behave

Disadvantages: Couldnot organise a p*ss up on the town moor

This opinion is based on a topic thats is really eating into me. This Weekend should have been Love Parade 2001 based on the Town Moor in the City of Newcastle. This was an event that was talked about with great enthusiasm and promised to bring a huge amount of visitors from all over Britain.

Basically "The Love Parade" was a hugh music festival that is held by Radio One and was last held in Leeds. This event caters for all music taste and last normally from Friday Afternoon right into Monday morning.

We in Newcastle do not normally get to see an event on this size without travelling out on the North - East. This was going to be an event to shown Newcastle off and show what we could do, but at the same time bring a huge amount of visitors along with valuable revenue for the likes of our hotel industry.

This event had been planned well ahead by the BBC. So was do you think its eaten me so much that the main stage on the Town Moor was cancelled on Tuesday last week???? The main event had to be cancelled as NEWCASTLE CITY COUNCIL forgot to ask to permission from the Police to stage the event and because Newcastle United qualified for the Inter Toto cup by chance less than 4 weeks ago and where playing at home, the Police couldnot handle two major events.

So imagine when you and your three mates from say Somerset slash out 70 quid each for rail tickets and book hotels for another £50 each. You managed to organise your selves, but because of the rubbish or non existance skills of Newcastle Council you get hit for Cancellation charges it isnot very nice. Will the people from Somerset ever come back to Newcastle again....

All I can say if I made a mistake that cost my company an estimated £1 million in revenue, I know I would be looking for a new job for sure. I dont thing I would get out of it by saying "So sorry" and pass the blame away from yourselves.

Now the plus side........

In
Newcastle our pubs are only allowed to open til 11.00pm. This weekend nearly all the pubs had licences from the Love Parade to stay open to 1.00am. This was the first time ever that Newcastle had a nice feeling in the air because of a couple of reason.

Normally at 1030 everyone at Newcastle moves around town for last orders to meet there friends etc. Normally people try to stick as much beer down their necks as possible in this time, which I believe is the reason for so many fights breaking out when people are ask to leave for the night. Everyone leaves the town at the same time, and everyone fights for a taxi...more than often with there fists while waiting in the Q.

Saturday was completely different in Newcastle. It matched other cities like Liverpool when people filter away at different times whcih means less fights. Newcastle is an incredable to drink but its still upsetting a night out spoilt by out of date laws. Newcastle council take note and use this as an example. Pubs that when open til 1am didnot cause anymore trouble. Infact Saturday night was a lot busier than normal and the town was buzzing. Help Newcastle City make up the money which you lost them and change the licensing hours.

Help keep Newcastles name as the Party Capital

Newcastle is without a doubt the partying capital of Britain. It was voted so by Conde Nast Traveller magazine. It was also voted 6th most partying city in the world. We don't have the best clubs or the best bars, but we have an unrivalled atmosphere. Oh and we consume twice the national average of beer apparently.

Jeff 2000, our bars close at 11pm, and our nightclubs mainly close at 2 or 3am, with the exception of Legends which is open until 4am on Saturdays.

Our laws are way too outdated. Our bars and nightclubs should be allowed open later. This would reduce the amounts of fights, because when I'm on nights out, I never see any fights throughout the night, until 11, when everyone is made to leave at once, and against at 2/3am, when they're made to leave the clubs at once.

I agree, Newcastle is a fantastic city.. which could be loads better given a kick up the arse by the right boot! There was a great atmosphere on Sat despite the parade being cancelled and the Telewest was excellent in the evening.

I agree with you about the Love Parade - pathetic!
Having said that, I don't think your op gives much general info about Newcastle at all - maybe it would have been better in the events category?
Feel free to let me know if you get it moved and I'll happily re-rate. I can completely understand tha rant, but I'm not convinced this is the right place for it :)
