I have been a local of Newport for a few years now, though I definately live in one of the nicer suburbs. Unfortunately, Newport has a bit of a reputation for things like crime and teenage pregnancy. It is commonly referred to as a "dump" both by local and non-local people although this is definately a little harsh and Newport is definately up and coming.
The Newport skyline by the river has really improved recently with the construction of the massive white metal footbridge, the new Newport Bridge and the Riverfront theatre. There are cool fountains and spotlights embedded into the pavement. Many of the buildings near the riverfront, mostly offices and also the student accomadation for Newport University are frankly pretty damn nice.
There is no reason to be scared whilst walking around Newport providing you are streetwise to some degree. Like everywhere, certain places are worse for crime than others, but listening to the mayor of Newport at a conference recently, he is well aware of the problems facing his city and is really keen to tackle some of them. I have seen the Newport "graphiti busters" vehicle doing its rounds on a couple of occasions and this is something I feel Newport should be very proud of.
The council has even replaced all of the Newport bus stops with new ultra-modern glass ones as it prepares to welcome many visitors for the coming ryder cup.
Newport is definately on the up and maybe in a decade, it will be as nice as Cardiff.

Summary: Definately not somewhere to rule out straight away, give it a chance!

Hmm, I've been to Newport once for a few hours in the middle of a Friday night - all I remember is a) a lot of drunk/drugged up rough looking prostitutes hanging around near a road by a factory b) a well dressed young bloke who wanted us to sniff his hand because he'd cacked in a park and hadn't found enough leaves to wipe! So seemed quite entertaining lol
