Advantages: Just beautiful
Disadvantages: Can get over crowed in peak season
I first visited Newquay about 7 years ago and fell in love with the place but I do think over the years it has started to look a little run down and as another reviewer has called it a little tacky I have to agree a little.
Newquay is geared up for tourists, especially the younger generation as there is a lot of bars, clubs and pubs. Don't get me wrong it's a great night out, but there is so much more to Newquay than that. However The first time I went I was in my early twenties and really did enjoy the nights out. I stayed with a friend in a youth hostel called Cribber Green Rooms and it was the best holiday I ever had. It was cheap but the staff and owner were so friendly. As it was out of season it was quite quiet so they took us on a night around the town. It was fantastic.
My favourite bar has to be the Vic Bar which is fantastic if your into alternative music like myself. I think the thing that I remember the most about this bar was that they played old cartoons and kids programmes like button moon on the big screen with no sound while heavy metal music was playing on the juke box. I just loved this pub.
If you are taking the family then take a trip to the zoo which is beautiful on a hot summers day or the aquarium which is quite small but still good worth a look.
The place really is beautiful. The sea is a lovely blue/green colour. It's hard to believe it's part of the UK. The beaches are just gorgeous but they tend to get extremely busy and aren't recommended for bathing especially Fistral beach as you are likely to get hit in the head by a surf board!
There are loads of water activities to take part in and lessons that can be taken. I would recommend horse riding on the beaches like the Gannel which is actually an estuary but is very peaceful compared to the main beaches.
I stayed in a cottage on the Gannel one year which was absolutely gorgeous as the garden lead down to the beach. It was really like having a private beach as no one really seems to use it apart from walking dogs.
Newquay is a great base for exploring Cornwall it's close to all major attractions like the Eden centre. There is plenty to do like visiting beatiful gardens, cider farms and much more. Newquay harbour is truly picturesque. There are plenty of fishing activities, we had a go at shark fishing which is great whether you like fishing or not and if you are there at the right time you will probably see the dolphins which makes the fishing trip worth while even if you don't catch anything.
There is a huge range of accomodation from youth hostels to 5 star luxury hotels. I swear one day if I win the lottery I will buy the house in the sea (look it up, apparently the most photographed house in England). Newquay boasts an award winning fish and chip restaurant and has one of the best Indian Reastaurants I have ever been to. Sorry can't remember the names though. The people are all so friendly but it does lack local people. Most of the people running holiday accomodation are not from cornwall in fact you won't come across many with that charming cornish accent. That is the one thing that is missing from this cornish town.
If you don't like masses of tourists and over crowded beaches then the best time to go is April and May. The weather is usually quite nice that time of year. Or you could stay in a smaller village on the outskirts of Newquay like Mawgan Porth which is as equally picturesque.
I love Newquay, it has become a little too touristy but it still is a beautiful place to visit.
Summary: Just a beautiful place to visit, great night life too!
