Where's the surf? (Newquay in General)

Advantages: Surfing, zoo and aquarium

Disadvantages: Despite being a tourist attraction it's not very attractive and I've yet to see the surf

Until a year ago I had never been to Newquay, but it is the surfing capital of England used predominantly for national and international competitions.

The main beach for this is Watergate which is still considered part of Newquay despite being a good 5+ miles away. Until last year, my wife and her kids loved Trevone a little further along the coast but still considered one of the beaches and was pretty good for body boarding.

I know that Newquay, Bude and Ilfracombe are the best areas (supposedly) for surfing, but of the 3 I've only ever seen big waves at Ilfracombe.

Driving into Newquay there's a few areas on the front which look very run down and despite being a very much tourist driven location it does not give me a feeling of excitement.

The one relief is that I didn't see a McDonalds or KFC - in fact they seem pretty scarce in all my trips last week to the North Coast of Cornwall and around Bideford. The only one of the main fast food chains I've seen was a burger king. So, some kids will be pretty p'd off.

My most lasting impression is how do I get out of here, which at 5pm on the sea front is virtually impossible.

I do not like what I've seen so far of Newquay, but I am interested in the zoo and aquarium - perhaps then I might be able to give it a better rating.
