Advantages: aimed at families, free sports, 2 room suites

Disadvantages: meals are only 2 courses if you eat with your children

The Sands Resort Hotel is at Porth near Newquay and is aimed at families. It changed it's name from Trevelgue Hotel last year and has been refurbished since I went. I went last September with my husband and 2 children (a 10 week old and a 2 year old). The bedrooms are 2 room open plan suites with a separate bedroom for the children. There are no doors separating the bedrooms but the bathroom is in between. There is a chill box in the rooms which is handy for keeping made-up bottles in for your baby. There is also a baby listening service. A lot of the rooms have sea views.
There is a lot to do for both parents and children. For parents there are free sports facilities - tennis, squash, golf, football, table tennis, mini tennis, croquet, boules, BMX track and basketball. There are also 2 swimming pools, one indoors(+ a toddler pool)and one outdoors. They have adult only sessions in the indoor pool. There is a beauty salon which uses Decleor products. There is also a spa and sauna, and you can attend Yoga or Tai Chi classes.
There are 4 different children's clubs - for the under 2's there is a soft-play area, there is a club for 2-3 yr olds, one for 4-7 yr olds that has a soft-play area with ball pool, and one for 8-14 yr olds that is only open in the school holidays. The clubs cost £3 for a 1 1/2 hour long session in the morning and £4 for a 2 hour session at night, but are free from 4 years. Outside of club hours the facilities can all be used. There are indoor and outdoor play areas and often a bouncy castle. There is also a hobby club most days where they do crafts and hobbies.
There is a launderette and laundry service (handy when you have young children), and baby food preparation rooms (with a microwave and fridge)in the hotel.
For your evening meal you have a choice of eating with or without your children. Children can have an early meal then go in a club whilst you have your meal. Or you can eat as a family. Family dinner is at 6.
30-7.30pm and is 2 courses, whereas if you eat without your children it is at 7.30-8.45pm and is 3 courses. Under 7's are not allowed at the later meal. I found it a bit annoying that we only had 2 courses because we wanted to eat as a family (my youngest daughter was only 10 weeks old and cried a lot at night so we didn't want to put her in the children's club).
There was also a hire shop so you can hire buggies, sterilisers, and microwaves. It costs from £245 at the end of September to £420 peak season for a week half board. There are supersaver weeks out of the main season which are quite a lot cheaper.
The hotel is near Porth Beach, although it is a steep hill going back to the hotel. Newquay is a short drive away. This hotel is brilliant if you have young children, with a chance to relax for the parents. There is also lots to do around Newquay with young children, and the beaches are excellent.
The website address is www.sandsresort.co.uk which is quite good with all the information about the hotel that you could want.
