Advantages: Beautiful Scenery, Plenty to do, Sea Sand Sun (sometimes!!)
Disadvantages: Weather , NOt as thriving as yaers ago as people now go abroad
Friends , Romans Countrymen , lend me your FEET !!! and COME to Portrush !! i am 34 years of age , and when i look back , my fondest childhood memories are of summers spent in Portrush. Give a child a bucket and spade and lots of sand and they are happy. Amusements too are a kid`s delight , and are a-plenty here. An ice cream cafe famous all over Ireland (don`t know if i caan name it) and owned by an Italian family is a MUST. Yes there is plenty to keep your kids happy here . But what of us older "fogies" (hehe)..?? Well...the Giant`s Causeway...filled with mystery and folklore....is a MUST. Many times i have sat at the top of the cliffs (no, i wasn`t feeling suicidal hehe) and taken a deep breath of that fresh sea air and the beautiful scenery all around. In the cliffs , nature has carved out herself the shape of an church organ.....and when you go there , the place abounds with Germans , Americans , Japenese , Australians , wanting their photo taken in front of it and down at the other rocks by the sea which are also world famous. Along the coast a little further is the ruin of Dunluce Castle....centuries ago , the kitchen fell into the sea (rather unfortunate if you happened to be the chef hehehe) , and you can get a guided tour around the ruins. This is a must too. Also there is a quaint little shop at the car park. If you care to travel further up the coast you will discover Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge....not for the faint hearted !!! No ..really ..i am the world`s greatest coward and i crossed it and you get a certificate to say that you did !! Aren`t ya proud of me ?? (hehe)When you cross the bridge there is a little island wher you can relax and dream across the vast ocean and also look at the wildlfe (sea-bird variety !!)Just a few minutes from Portrush is the town of Portstewart and it has a 3 mile long drive-on beach. I could spend a fortnight there !! HONEST !! You gotta go !! If the sun is out , it is as good as any Spanish resort !! OK i a
m biased !! Back to the centre of Portrush just specially for the WOMEN is a large shop called the WHITEHOUSE. It`s the first place any woman worth her salt heads for on an excursion to this sea-side resort and every man moans and groans as he sees her head like a headless chicken straight for it !! But take heart men....there sre some good men`s clothes there too and you can nip across the road and shoot `em up at the arcade when the wife isn`t watching. She won`t notice !! Really !! Not for the first 4 hours any way !! (hehehe) Fish and Chip shops abound here and if you feel like it you can go a- fishin` down by the rocks , or you can hire out a surf board and do your "Old Spice Advert" impressiom in front of all the ladies. (If that`s the sort of thing you like doing !! wink wink !!) As for me , give me a snooker cue at the arcade and i`m happy. Or down at the tennis courts or outdoor bowling green. (Always thought that was an old man`s game but now i am hooked !).There is a major golf course too and a pitch and putt for us rather more embarrassed golfers !!Guest houses and Bed and Breakfast places abound and are all recommendable. Oh and the smell first thing in the morning of an Ulster Fry cooking MMMMMMMm to die for (well, that wouldn`t help cuz you wouldn`t get to eat it but you know what i mean !!)
Sausage , bacon , fried eggs , potato bread, soda bread , fried tomato , brown sauce ...can`t you taste it now ???? MMMMMMMMM !!
Well , i could go on and on , but i iwll finish now. Only to say that i owuld have no problems spending two weeks on this beautiful haven of rest. thereis so much to see all around within such a short driving distance.
So my advice is...JUST DO IT !! You have seen the rest , now come to the best !! Come on you English , Scottish and Welsh guys and gals !! You have no excuse !! Paradise is only a jump across the ocean. when you have been here , you will come back. By the way , on a clear day , along the c
oast , you can see The Mull of Kintyre (Scotland ) across the way. Wonder if Paul McCartney has ever taken his WINGS and flwon across to Portrush ?? (hehe)
Take Care all you readers , and Just DO IT
