As we drove up the hill from Porth bay we were filled with a feeling of dread, what was this hotel going to be like??? There arent any pictures in the brochure, so we assumed the worst!! We neednt have worried....Its a lovely looking, prettily decorated "Hacienda" style property..well-maintained and well-positioned. The interior does look a little jaded in parts, and there are some decorative "details" in the childrens areas that you might think are tacky....but they arent for you!!!! Your children will love opening the louvre doors in the walls and finding Mickey Mouse there!! The rooms are particularly nice, my little boy was thrilled to bits with the 3d boat pictures and the lighthouse wall-light. They are designed as 2 room suites that have a childrens area with 2 cabin style beds (we also had a good quality travel cot, all made up with sheet and brightly coloured quilt), a corridor that houses a good sized wardrobe, shelving, fridge and tea/coffee facilities. This leads to the master bedroom and the en-suite bathroom. They is a scald protection button on the hot tap and a little plastic step so that a toddler can reach the sink and toilet. Meal-times are well organised.. you can arrange to have a family meal, or the children can have their tea in their very own cafe and you can eat as a couple in the Bistro later, after switching on the baby monitor of course! I was concerned that my children would be living on a diet of chicken nuggets and chips for a week, but every night the children had a choice of 3 meals. There was of course the obligatory nuggets, but also a vegertarian dish and a 'proper' meal for example Roast Turkey, Roast potatoes, cabbage, peas and gravy followed by apple pie and custard. Our meals were also of a very high standard, 3 courses with 5 or 6 choices for each course. Breakfast is a buffet, with plenty to choose from. A fried English breakfast is a few pounds extra, and we did have it once and it
wasnt very good, so I wouldnt bother if I were you! The kids clubs are open plan so that the children and staff are always visible, the clubs for the very young ones Teddies (babies) and Tigers (toddlers to age 4) are in a very cramped space, but my little boy went to Tigers 4 times and had a brilliant time, he did some painting, and was taken out to the childrens playground, which alleviated the problem of space. Another bonus that we found whilst we were at Sands was that the rooms have a daily chamber-maid service. One day I was trying to get the baby to have a nap because she was a bit grotty, I had the 'Do Not Disturb' sign on the door so the maid left a huge pile of fluffy white towels, a bag of tea and coffee sachets and some bin liners with a note apologising because she was finishing and wouldnt be able to fully service the room! How nice is that?! And typical of all the staff who were all so lovely and helpful. Most of the waiting staff seemed to comprise of surfers, who are ideally suited to this type of hotel because they are so laid back! we never ever felt stressed eating with our children in the restaurant, despite Isabel being one year old and insistant on feeding herself, so you can imagine the mess!! This was treated as the norm and we were never made to feel dreadful, although we tidied up as best we could (honest!). I cannot reccomend this resort highly enough, it was a truly relaxing holiday with a 3 year old and a 1 year old which we never though would be possible, and we will definately be going back next year!!(Oh!! If you fancy going in the immediate futtre there are special offers on at the moment..£490 for family of 4 for 7 nights half board, worth every penny!) OH!!!! forgot to tell you that you can hire everything you may need for a baby - steriliser, buggy, microwave...you can even hire a vcr (we took our own) and a playstation. Days out: would recommend going to Newquay Zoo.....lovely, well pres
ented and animals seem very well cared for. Do not go to Old Macdonalds Farm...big old rip off, cash in, animals look very unhappy.
