Disadvantages: quiet
Sheringham There are two Sheringhams an Upper Sheringham about 2 miles inland and Lowe Sheringham on the sea.
A childs holiday place.
Yes I used to go on holiday in Sheringham on the east coast when I was little 40 + years ago.
It has changed a little since then more houses, different shops but the general feel of the town is the same. It is a fishing village although with the declining fish stocks there is not as much fishing industry but still you get fish for sale from the fishing boats on the quayside. You could always take your line and hook and hope to catch a fish or a crab yourself
Let me start at the beach a shingle top and as the tide retreats a sandy beach is uncovered. I spent many happy childish hours making sandcastles burying dad. Eating my sand wiches here crabbing, the beach is divided with groins to keep the shingle from washing out I guess. The sea if I remember correctly is quite safe not shelving deeply. It has the European blue flag award. The sea and the onshore breeze can make it cold on the beach I can remember wrapping up in jumpers and coats sometimes. The beach is a long beach and you can walk from sheringham for miles along the cliff paths. There are lifeguards patrolling the beach in the summer. Further out are a few small limestone islands. So many happy hours can be spent here catching fish digging holes or just sunbathing, do remember your sun cream and hats actually if you do not there are plenty of these on sale in the shops on the sea front.
Just above the beach there are several outlets selling snacks and refreshments with seating inside or out. Then there is the lifeboat station with a fundraising shop. Then there is a boating lake.
There are a few shops to browse around a flower shop, arts and crafts, and fashion shops plenty to spend your money on.
There are two market days Saturday and Wednesday
One of the reasons we have been to Sheringham in my grown up years is to bird watch The east coast is good for bird watching sea birds and migrants. It is a good centre to stay at if you wish to visit Cley a very popular north Norfolk bird reserve as its only a few miles away here in the summer you will probably see marsh harriers and avocets among the many birds. Or on the other side of Sheringham there is Kelling heath where stonechats breed and you may hear a nightingale sing on a romantic summers evening. There are many other nature reserves around this area the main attraction being birds,
However if you wish to seal watch the east coast is the place seal boats are a good way to spend a time Seal boats go from Blakeney not very far away about 10 miles. We went on one of these trips with my daughter when she was about 12 ish we did see several seals.
There is not a great deal of entertainment for teenagers in the way of dance clubs there is a weekly folk club and I think one dance club.
In the centre of Sheringham there is the clock tower built in the 18 C
There is a museum that holds a display about the fishing industry. Boat building and there are the remains fossilised mammoth millions of years old.
There is a little theatre at Sheringham giving summer performances, or if you are a golfer there is a golf course.
The town carnival is the first Wednesday in August with floats and stalls.
The north Norfolk railway the Poppy line runs from Sheringham to Holt 5 miles away with either steam trains or vintage diesel trains.
There is a standard train service from Norwich to Sheringham so if you were in Norwich Sheringham would make a good place to visit.
If you wish to stay in Sheringham there is a variety of accommodation campsites, caravan parks, private bed and breakfasts, guesthouses and hotels.
Thanks for reading my review on Sheringham .Its really a place for children and older folk or birders . Its a nice old town steeped with tradition and history
