Penrith a lovely place to stay. (Short Breaks from Carlisle)

Advantages: Beautiful countryside and lots to do.

Disadvantages: Accommodation prices.

Me and my then boyfriend were on holiday from work and found ourselves bored and generally in need of a good break away. We were going through a rocky patch and decided on Carlisle or nearby because it was somewhere we had always fancied seeing.



After visiting our local tourist information centre and armed with lists of hotel's and villages to stay we were well prepared when traveling up the A1 to our destination. They even gave us directions which were easy to follow and understand (even me).



We arrived in Penrith at around 4pm and our hotel which was part of the shire inn group,was waiting for us on the edge of a dual-carriage way which i must confess put us off a little but once inside you would never had known. Our hotel was had a cosy,old fashioned and romantic feel to it (or maybe that was just me,sentimental old fool). And we were situated 5 minutes walk from the main town, but as it was always raining we never tested this out to see if it was. The town had evrything from all the latest shops to lots of restaurants and pubs. which we defiantely had to sample.



We were itching to see Carlisle and this we did the next day, the drive took approx 35 minutes from our hotel and when we arrived we were a little dissapointed because the town in itself was very dirty considering all the beautiful country side surrounding it. But it had a great range of shops and local eateries which lifted the atmosphere somewhat. Carlisle will alays hold special memories to me because it is where my hubby proposed and purchased my ring from the goldsmith's jewelery shop that is there.



If you are like my partner and really do not want to shop when you are on holiday then there are a great many things to keep you occupied. Down the road from us was the village of Kendal which is renowned for its mint chocolate and there is even a chocolate factory and shop which we found great fun, althou
gh i must say finding this factory was a little difficult but well worth it.



The next day we decided to visit the famous lake Windermere and the views whilst driving there were fantastic and so breath-takingly beautiful we were totally awe-struck. One minte we were driving on a flat the next we were up in the clouds with the sheep.

We had a fantastic time here and there was stll a great amount of things we could have done. There was a Beatrix Potter world here what we wanted (or more like i wanted to) to visit but we didn't get the time but next time we will.



I think to fully appreciate all that cumbria has to offer,you need at least 7 days here,i dont feel i have done cumbria the justice it deserves in this opinion but then i never got to see all it offered but i can say that next time i will see the lot.

It cost us around £380 for a three day stay, but that was a four-star hotel. I believe you can stay in lodges for a better price but again ask at the above office for a list.
