Advantages: Easy to get around by public transport

Disadvantages: None

Around Chelmsford there are plenty of things you can do for a great day trip! Just down the road is Danbury where there is the common which is great for walking or bike riding - even horse riding if you want to. Colchester Zoo is nearby about half an hour up the A12 as is fun for children and adults alike. If you drive on a bit further you come to Dedham where there is some beautiful countryside to walk around, a lovely river where you can hire a boat and row around (with ducks to pull along for children). There is Southend nearby which is worth a visit for the airshow or on a lovely sunny day! Marsh Farm country Park in South Woodham Ferrers is great for animal lovers, old and young and makes a great day out. Hylands Park in Chelmsford is home to Hylands House a popular wedding venue. You can visit the house and have a picnic in the park - it's also a great place to walk your dog. Carter's Vineyards in Colchester have open days and is family run - i recently went to an evening party there and it was fantastic - very picturesque setting and informative tours. I will definitely go again for a day trip. Lakeside and Bluewater are the closest shopping centres and make for a great day out of shopping or cinema visits and both have a huge array of restaurants and bars. Braintree is home to Freeport Designer Village where you can pick up some great bargains! There's all this and so much more if you fancy a day out in and around Chelmsford!

Summary: Great days out for all with a bit of forward planning

Ha, after being brought up in Essex for the last 22 years, I'm kinda glad I've moved out to London! But there are plenty of things to do in Essex - I can't wait to go to the New Hall vineyard festival in September in Danbury - definitely worth a day out!
