The children were going to spend the weekend with the mother-in-law and there was an opportunity for my wife and I to enjoy a weekend break on our own. Obviously the place to start looking was on the Internet to see what hotel offers were available. We started with the English Tourist Board web site and found links to quite a few hotel chains with special weekend offers. My wife said that she would like to go to a hotel that had a sauna and a swimming pool and I said I wanted to go to a city that I had never visited before. Apart from those criteria (and not wanting to spend too much money) our hunt was on. It was not long before we came across the Jarvis group of hotels, which have leisure clubs at quite a few of their hotels and were offering very good weekend rates. Also you could check availability on-line and book a reservation. It took a couple of tries to find a hotel with spaces on the dates that we wanted, but in the end we decided to go to the Jarvis Hotel and Country Club in Gloucester. Booking was very easy and we received written confirmation a couple of days later. I have written a separate opinion on the hotel, which was very good, and my wife really enjoyed the sauna and the swimming pool. On arriving in Gloucester we were very pleasantly surprised by the city, which seemed very spacious with plenty of open spaces and a very picturesque city. Also parking was very easy with many city centre car parks and the sign posts around the town meant that we could easily find our way to anywhere we wanted to go. Apart from breakfast at the hotel we eat all our meals out and Gloucester has a complete cross section of restaurants, from many nationalities, and all at very reasonable prices. Within the city we found restaurants that were Chinese, Italian, Greek, American, English, Thai and Indian. Everywhere that we ate was very clean and the staff were very polite. The city of Gloucester has a mix of historic
al attractions including the restored docks area, the cathedral and local museums. There is also a thriving modern shopping area with a complete mix of the usual chain stores and many independent small interesting shops. There are also a number of “out of town” shopping areas. On the Friday night the whole city centre was thriving with youngsters out and about at the local pubs and clubs, seeming to have a very enjoyable night, with no signs or trouble or violence anywhere. The city is in a pleasant area of the country, only a few miles from the Malvern Hills and easier accessible from the M5 motorway. Everyone we met in the city was very friendly and we had a very enjoyable weekend in Gloucester. We certainly did not see all the places or things that we wanted to and I know that we shall be returning here to explore further around the town and surrounding area. I have written a number of separate opinions about some of the places we visited and also some of restaurants we ate in, but certainly I can recommend Gloucester as an ideal place for a weekend break.
