A good family day out if you are in Herefordshire is a trip to Shortwood Farm. Really this is one for the kids but I'm 27 and I enjoy myself as well so it really is worth doing.
Shortwood is a Working Organic Dairy Farm situated near Pencombe in the heart of the Hererfordshire countryside, about 15 minutes from Hereford. It'll cost you around £6 per adult and £4 for kids. The price is well worth it for the enjoyment and also the educational factor for the children (and adults!).
The guided tour around the farm allows children to hand feed goats, calves, donkeys, ducks, pigs and so on. And really get up close experiences with farm animals. A tractor and trailer ride across the fields down to the woods and back through a field full of pigs and piglets is available. The guided walk through the woodland is full of information about the trees and badgers found there.
It is also possible to watch the cows being milked by the machines or even milk a cow yourself by hand!
Kids love playing with the kittens and guinea pigs in the barn. As well as bottle feeding the lambs. If they get bored of the animals there is a HUGE playground for them to enjoy, including loads of toy tractors to ride around on!
The shop has a huge range of souvenirs and toys and things. Also the amount of information around the farm on the walls or on videos is fantastic. The family farm has a lot of interesting history.
There are also some fantastic views to be had looking out across the county to the Malvern Hills and beyond.
Well worth checking out if you are in this area and have young kids.
Summary: Well run farm and an excellent day out
