Advantages: great for families with young children
Disadvantages: not a lot to do for older children
I went with a group of friends to Southport and we all had babies under 2. It was great for us, a nice beach (that wasnt too crowded) plenty of places to eat and have a drink and there were lots of facilities to change your baby/toddler.
Theres also quite a lot of shops, so if you wanted to do a spot of shopping at the same time that would be great.
Southport has a flower festival in August every year, which is probably its busiest time, so if you want it a bit quieter it might be worth avoiding it then.
It has its own version of Alton Towers but there aren't that many rides, so not somewhere you could spend the whole day with older children.
I would say great place for a day visit but not somewhere I would go on holiday
