Advantages: A truly beautiful place
Disadvantages: Quite hilly
I was fortunate enough to go to St Ives the week before Christmas and it was the most wonderful way to spend a Saturday. The streets were lit up, the shops were beautifully decorated and full of the most exciting gifts and the sea was shimmering in the sun. The reason for my visit was a trip to the Tate Gallery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. Although I'm not particularly interested in art and sculpture both were fascinating. The old studio that Barbara Hepworth did her sculpting have been preserved and you could easily imagine her working there, and the garden was amazing - full of these wonderful works of art, surrounded by beautiful plants. In contrast to a lot of Cornish seasides, all the shops were open and there were plenty of places to eat at prices to suit everyone. There were plenty of quaint tea rooms serving a good variety of pastries and cakes. Artists and photographers had a field day, there was so much scenery and apparently there is something particularly special about the light in St Ives being just right for painting. No one could fail to enjoy at least a weekend in St Ives whatever the season.

- 10/01/01 I went there for New Year and had one of the best nights in living memory. 20,000 nutters in fancy dress, far too much alcohol and an enormous street party makes London or Edinburgh look positively lame. |

- 12/07/00 One of my ambitions is to spend Christmas and New Year at St.Ives one of these years - I've heard it's a great time to be there, and it's one of my favourite places anyway! |
