Advantages: lots to see and do
Disadvantages: not enough time
Stafford is the county town of Staffordshire and is an ideal tourist destination.
We have The Ancient High House, a black and white timbered building on the main street.
Stafford Castle, a medeival ruin.
Shugborough hall, home of the earl of Lichfield and many more old buildings which are all worth a visit.
Above all these we are on the doorstep of Cannock chase, an area of outstanding beauty. This comprises of acre upon acre of woodland, heathland and grassland and is a haven for wildlife including the magnificent herds of wild deer.
As a tourist for the day , you could do worse than arriving at Stafford staion and spending the day around town.
So, hop off the train onto the draughty platform (aren't they all), and make your way outside.
Opposite the station you will find Staffod's Victoria park.
Victoria Park is set out in several sections, Trees, shrubs and walkways, the river Sow, bowling green and cafe, Oh and toilets in this bit. And the childrens and sports area.
First take a walk amongst the trees and shrubs, carefully maintained by the council workmen (or is that work persons).
You will find plenty of benches and shelters in the grassy area to sit and relax.
Further along there is the bandstand where free concerts are held in the summer, the last one I went to was a jazz concert on a war sunny afternoon and it was very good.
Next take a walk along the river and feed the abubdance of ducks then walk over the quaint footbridge to the bowling green area.
There is also a large greenhouse (open to the public) and a rather tatty aviary, (I must say I do no like this bit and think it should be scrapped).
Just by the bowling green is a very nice outdoor cafe, serving tea , cakes and ices etc.
If you have kids take a stroll into the play park which has all the usual swings slides etc , together with a couple of tennis courts and a paddling pool.
By now you may need sustenance, so stroll into town where you will find loads of cafe's, bars and eateries to revive you fr your journey home.
I hope you enjoy our town and hope you will come again to take in the other attractions.
Summary: A great place to vist and a nice place to live

- 15/11/09 A shame the aviary is decaying: that could be quite an attraction if in a better state. Ages since I've been to Stafford, despite living in the w. Mids. |
