Advantages: quiet, not really pricey

Disadvantages: not that much character

I lived in Surrey Quays as an area for around 4 years and during that time seriously grew to love the area. It is one of the few bits of London that has any spacious areas and that is actually quiet on the whole.

The completion of the Jubilee line has greatly helped the area and made it much easier to get either into the West-end or into Canary Wharf for work. The old East-London line is pretty useless because it doesn't really go anywhere and so Canada Water is a better bet as a tube station than Surrey Quays.

Housing in the area is generally modern 1980s- 2000 and is small roomed terraced housing or appartments. The nice developments look onto the restored docks or onto the Thames and these are the places that are really sort after. Having said that though, some surprisingly cheap rents from private landlords can be found.

Shopping in the area is a doddle with a big shopping centre that has everything you really need - especially a 24hour Tescos.

Pubs and bars are okay with places including the Wibbly-Wobbly (a converted boat) and the busy Quebec Curve.

There is a cinema and bowling alley which gives something to do on a quiet night along with some fairly tacky restaurants in the leisure park.

Surrey Quays is a good area for jogging as it is flat and quiet. It is also nice to jog past the Surrey Docks City Farm which is always worth a look for the baby goats.
