If you are thinking where have I heard the name Tetbury before as you dont know this area it is probably that you know one of the modern reasons that Tetbury is famous and that is because Prince Charles and Princess Diana bought Highgrove which is in Tetbury.
Tetbury is in Gloucestershire and is known as the entrance to The Cotswolds.
If you love ancient buildings then Tetbury has more than its fair share. The Parish Church dates back to 1777 and was built by Francis Hiorn. It is thought to be the best Georgian Gothic church built. It has been extensively restored but restored to its original 18th century look. The spire is the fourth highest in England.
Tetbury has a market house. It is pillared and still used as a Maret. Wednesdays is market day and with tetbury having so many antique shops there is of course an antique stall. On Fridays it is an antique market.
The Chipping steps is the old site of the Mop Fair. This is where farm hands and domestic staff went and hoped that employers would pick them.
Gumstool Hill is the oldest street now famous for the Woolsack Races. If you have never been to this you are really missing something. They roll cheeses down this hill and you run after it. Sounds easy doesnt it but oh boy the hills steep and it is far from easy. There is tale that at the bottom of the hill was a pool where scolding wives and other miscreants were tied to a ducking stool or as it was called in those days a Gumstool and ducked under water as punishment hense the name.
If you are a gardener you must visit Westonbirt Arboretum. 600 acres for you to see. It is said that there isnt a tree in the World that Westonbirt hasnt got. It is open all year round so you can see it with the different seasons.
There are a lot of specialist shops in Tetbury and lots and lots of antique shops.Of course some are by appointment of The Prince of Wales.
So if you are in Gloucestershire thi
s is a definate place to visit. I cannot guarantee that you will see Charles and Camilla or for that matter even want to but there presence is felt in Tetbury
